Crowing Hen...
Gertie has gawn all perculiar.. she's an ancient Maran, kinda Matriach. Last week she was broody.. and this week, she's taken to crowing... it is blessed loud and sounds awful!! It's not even a tuneful cock-a-doodle-dooooo! It's more of a "CAAAAAwwwwwOOOOOOERRRR!!! any ideas of how to remind her of her more feminine side?
Re: Crowing Hen...
My Marans, Atilla the hen (RIP) made the most awful noise..all the time...
Pot eggs. or rubber ones. Make her go broody.
Failing that, introduce her to the art of chiciken casserole making?

Re: Crowing Hen...
We have had a few go this way. The first we tried to "understand" but she developed spurs and was constantly mounting and attacking the hens still young enough to lay. She also eat the eggs..... she was despatched to a better place. Now we are a little quicker to act if they get too male and agressive.

Re: Crowing Hen...
One of our cockerels has been beating all hell out of the others. He did it again this morning just as we let them all out, which was bad timing on his part, because we were running late and already grumpy. So I quickly pulled his head off and we will have coq au vin tomorrow.
Good thing about tweed suits is blood barely shows.

Um.. I forgot to mention.... I'm a veggie....
I couldn't kill her if you paid me.. comes from too many years on a farm watching dispatches, I reckon.... I had a slightly weird macabre side, used to drag a chair to the kitchen sink to watch Ma pluck, behead and dress pheasants... I'd shoot vermin and hang them out to get maggots for garden birds I liked.... pleasant child....
Anyhoo... she's stopped, thank Gawd.... but thanks for the recipe ideas...
