Does rice go off?
I'm busy eating up the contents of the Store Cupboard. LMJ is not keen on brown rice, so what is in there has been there for several years - don't know how many. Can I assume it is inert and eat it? No sign of moth infestation.
Or do we eat the chilli with pasta? Never any danger of that being old!!

Re: Does rice go off?
should be absolutely fine, JG. I have rice stored for many years and it is quite edible.
Re: Does rice go off?
I've just eaten a whole packet of moth-infested almond flakes. I removed 2 maggots, and the cobweb strands, and roasted them in a skillet (NOT the maggots, but the flakes).
I watch a (terrible, but somehow fascinating to me) TV programme where 16 contestants are on a desert island and they have to survive and go through all sorts of trials etc... and only one is left in the end - you know the sort of thing.
The worst part, for me, is always when they have to eat grubs. Huge. live, squirming maggoty grub very much like cockshafer. I usually just leave the room. Last night though (they are in Vietnam, not the usual location, and that means so no grubs, but scorpions instead). Black scorpions, looking cooked and dessicated. And I thought "I could probably eat those", whereas grubs just fill me with repulsion.
All this to say that EVEN with the moths/maggots/larvae, it is possible to use the product - as long as you cook it after removing most traces of infestation.
Having said that, I realise it is probably not to everyone's taste.
