As a newcomer I'd love to get to know more about people. What was it which got you into growing things to eat? ☀

For me it's just wanting to know where things come from and reduce my food miles as much as possible. As simple as that!

My Grandfather had a gardener who I used to follow round all day aged about 4 and loved watching him work. Later, when I was about 10, I found a load of his veg seed packets and a wonderful old gardening book in the shed. I threw the seeds in the ground and most grew. I was a veg gardener Very Happy

Can't remember a time I didn't...started at my parent's side as soon as I could remember....grew things, made compost, had chicken, horses, sheep etc...

Even when I lived in a city I grew stuff in pots and on window ledgers...salads, herbs etc...and always have had a lot of house plants around as well.....

and yes wanted to know that I was eating stuff as fresh as possible and untampered with by chemicals etc...

When I was about eight, in the '60s, there was a school library book which I had on a fairly long-term loan. It must have been written during the war, and was a 'child's guide to growing vegetables' or something like that. What I loved most were the line drawings of neat rows of vegetables, and i think that's what got me started. No-one grew vegetables at home, so it was my own thing. I still love allotments, particularly the patterns, and would love to photograph or draw them. (No time at the mo - compost to make, exciting things to plan for the new growing season!)
I love the mental picture of you following the gardener, Green R, throwing seeds into the ground!

I remember the lotty when I was small & sunshiny days with strawberrie & cream.
When I got married & had a garden OH was keen & had competitions with a mate. You know, fattest, longest, most etc.
Then he started working with Special Needs people at a nursery & said forget it, do it yourself so I did.
I know what is in them & the taste is so much better. grow

The joy of growing what my family eat plus the love of the soil, solidified by suddenly having no income...but loads of land. For me is a natural thing to do and living with the earth and the moon cycles is all part of really being alive. grow

What got you all into growing food? Empty Re: What got you all into growing food?

For me, having fresh veg, composting and reusing/recycling has always been a part of my life. My father was the gardener and we were his assistants. He worked second shift all his life so he'd have daylight hours in the garden. We would get phone calls sending us out to close the lids on the cold frames or water something or other. Our floors always knew daddy's muddy shoe prints and our mouths always had the best most flavorful food to eat.

Dad died in 2000. My sister, who is the real gardener following in his foot steps, took up the mantle and has been slowly making it her own. We work in tandem. I happen to have a knack at starting seed and dealing with the processing of the harvest. She is a magician in the garden. We both do what's needed to get the job done.

As is the nature of gardeners everywhere, a small network of gardening friends have begun working together to grow and share their harvests. Every talent, every asset, every resource is working together to lessen the strain on any one person. It's almost as exciting as watching the garden grow.

OK... very suddenly, I'm quite ready for winter to be over. What got you all into growing food? Icon_smile
