What edible seeds do you grow?

I may be in a position to have an edible seed bed/area and was wondering what ideas others had. I use seeds in bread making and cooking.

I'm a bit boring, Zoe and grow for birdies more than me.. for me, I do pumpkin seeds and sunflowers, then I leave seed heads on everything for birds... and to scatter about the garden. I'll be dead interested for ideas though Very Happy

Like Lotty, I tend to grow sunflowers and squashes. I grow coriander, usually meaning to grow leaves but ending up with seeds Smile

. I tried Amaranth but didn't much like the result (ground amaranth seeds mixed with wheat flour 50:50 made a loaf like a brick with a strange gritty texture !). The rest is in the bird feeder, but even they aren't keen.

Not that I've tried them, but other possiblities might include linseed, caraway or poppy (papaver somniferum - watch out, the ripe seeds are the only non-poisonous part of the plant). All the latter can be had from Suffolk Herbs over here, don't know about France ...

I grow sunflower, poppy and fennel at present (for me and the birds). You need one full poppy head for a loaf of bread so I'm hoping to increase my number of plants. I tried celary seed from the celeriac but the heavy rain destroyed it. Caraway is one I want to try I'll have to look at what it needs to grow well. I use Suffolk Herbs as it is King Seed, which I get by mail order.

ChilliHead why do you say "papaver somniferum" specifically?

Only because I thought Papaver Somniferum, the opium poppy, is the one normally used for culinary poppy seed production - are other varieties of poppy suitable (and non-toxic) ? I don't know, but if someone does, I'd be interested.

I had bread with home grown pumpkin seeds in for my lunch today. Very tasty, but because they are from ordinary pumpkins, not the sort that have seeds without a hull, pretty laborious !

Don't suppose there are any easy ways to get them off are there ... I know I'm being a bit hopeful ...

You mean things grown primarily for their edible seeds?

Peas and beans are the most obvious. I'd put down "naked seed pumpkins" as we sometimes grow the variety "Kakai" except we tend to also use the seeds of other pumpkins/squashes grown primarily for their flesh and when we grow them, we use the flesh of the naked seed pumpkins just like any other pumpkins.

NOTE: the word "pumpkin" in it's American usage; certain (not all) squashes of the species C. pepo that are eaten mature* plus a few varieties of the other two species that resemble these in form. Roughly spherical, sometimes a bit flattened.

* the "summer squashes" are C. pepo that are normally eaten while still immature -- for example, zucchini
