Feeling generous (or sympathetic)?
Mods, if this isn't acceptable please feel free to delete (or donate )
So, a while back I was asked to participate in a sponsored bike ride (140 miles over 2 days, Bournemouth to Brighton). Didn't seem like a problem so I signed up, afterall I normally ride around 300 miles a week anyway. My initial confidence has been knocked however, as I've been challenged to do the ride on this....
All of a sudden 140 miles sounds like a very long way! 3 gears and tiny wheels makes riding really hard work!
Anyway, to the point of the thread, I'm looking for sponsors! If you're feeling any sympathy for me at all (think about 14 hours on that saddle!) then how about having a quick clicky here to sponsor me!
Thanks folks!

Good point CH!
The event is being run by Asthma UK, and all donations are going to them. Its not something I suffer from myself, but I do see way too many kids with inhalers on a daily basis, and would love to see some progress in their research.

My brother's best friend's sister died of an asthma attack. I'll stump up a contribution.

I had a friend die as a result of one, also. Will be sponsoring you .
One of the biggest issues when working with children is Asthma and Allergies. I have so many who have one, other or both. Its scary stuff, as a First Aider , and in charge of them, to know that out of 20 children maybe 8 have some form of serious allergy.......

Re: Feeling generous (or sympathetic)?
DW has Asthma something serious. Some allergies that exacrbate the issue in certain seasons as well. Also, a cousin on her side died just last year from an uncontrolled attack as well. She was seeing here GP for it regularly, took her medicines, then one night had an awful one and died of it before ever getting out of the door to go to E.R.! She was 9. We were all shocked and saddened.
I can imagine this little beauty of a machine being the perfect case study for raising funds for Asthma, though, lol. What has it? A 450 mm pedal stroke? And the tires on the smaller frame aren't usually built for an adult's weight. Are they special tires as well? I wish I could donate, but you have all of the emotional support I can muster. My quads and tail bone feel for you already.

Thanks folks!
The bike is a (forgotten!) design classic, having won awards in the late '70's. I'm not sure of the tech specs, but will have a prod around and get back to you tomorrow on that! The biggest single issue are the brakes. They're the same style as used on kiddies first bikes, not ideal for slowing down an 11 stone adult at 20mph!mr_sfstk8d wrote:

Is it coincidence, but after reading your post, I met a man down the supermarket with an Asthma UK bucket.
So I thought of you and threw some money in...

Re: Feeling generous (or sympathetic)?
Just thought I'd give this a little bump... and add some of the all important specs of the bike for you cyclists out there!
The bike runs 16x 1 3/8th tyres and a 61 (!) tooth front spocket, 13 rear. This gives around 75 inches of travel per revolution of the pedals. Not too bad, and given the 33% increase in gear 3 I can get a reasonable 100 inch (my road bike tops out at 109, so not far off that). The problems come with the reduction on the lowest gear (-33%) still gives me around 50 inches (my road bike drops to 20 something!), so the hills are going to be murder!
I've also had to replace the bearings all around as the poor little thing fell apart on a longer ride! Still waiting for the rear hub bearings, hopefully they should arrive today or tomorrow.
