Beating the supermarkets
When I last did a supermarket shop I estimated that prices had gone up by between 25% and 50% over the last six months, while most people's incomes have stayed the same. Although these rises have partly come about because of world prices, rises in the cost of fuel etc I must admit that I don't trust the big supermarkets! Assuming that most of us have to use supermarkets some of the time, I wondered if there were strategies we could share to make us more wary of their tricks (for want of a better word) and to shop without being taken in?

That's very interesting. I have certainly noticed that I spend more in supermarkets now for more or less the same!

Re: Beating the supermarkets
I had a 'discussion' with the manager of our branch of Te$co because a brand of teabags were labelled 'Manager's Choice' as if it was a special offer, using a yellow label on the shelf edge which is the colour used for 'money off' offers. It was about twice as expensive by weight than if you bought the same product in a larger size, and I contested the labelling. I was told (a little patronisingly) that large packs would always be cheaper by weight, and that 'Manager's Choice' referred to the fact that it was the best selling sized pack. My feeling was that it was out-and-out deception (hopefully this wasn't what I said, but it was what I thought!)

I agree - why would they need to promote it anyway? It was a way of pushing people into buying them. The whole concept of "Manager's Choice" is clearly meaningless.
I'm quite good on unit pricing - just as well!

Well of course the Manager would choose it. Best profit margins!
There are a wealth of websites/blogs out there which keep record of who's got what on sale at a time, as well as what time of year are best to buy certain things. I can't think off the top of my head, but some Googling would net you a lot of lists and lookup tables, I'm sure.
Takes some mapping, some pre-planning, menu organizing for what to use in what seasons, etc. but if you need to manage that money, you need to manage that time as well. I'm still working on that myself. Best of luck to all of us!!

By only doing a big shop every 2 weeks, I spend quite a bit less, probably about 1/3 as I don`t see the weekly "bargains" or the cheapy bins. Also I hate shopping.

I went out today anbd bought what I need for tonight. We have friends coming over. I resisted the "buy 2 for..." on cucumbers as I only saved 10p - well, 5p per cucumber and I may waste part of the 2nd one.

I take my bicycle shopping. It has a wicker basket on the front and a wire basket on the back - enough room for the basics. It concentrates the mind beautifully on what to buy if you know you're going to have to fit it all into two baskets AND keep your balance on the journey home!
