Tomatillos ! Empty Tomatillos !

Post by Chilli-head 30th June 2011, 11:06 am

Tomatillos are one of those unusual veg which are, unusually, worth growing ! I first tried them after I was given a Mexican cookbook written by Rick Bayless (Website with some great recipies -> here <-). In previous year's I've always grown them under glass, where they tend to grow well, but make a rather untidy mess. Then I read somewhere that they grow quite happily outdoors in the UK, and that seemed to be confirmed by the number of volunteers that keep popping up in the garden, so this year I'm trialling them outside. So far, so good ! I have lots papery husks with fruit starting to swell inside. The plants themselves seem healthy, most pests seem to leave them alone (even muntjac !) just a cane for support needed.

If you've never tried them, have a look at the recipies on Rick's website. You'll want to grow you own next year ...

Anyone else found something out of the ordinary worth growing ?

I am growing early Latah tomatos from the Real Seed Co. They really were early!

And Costoluto Genovese, which are even bigger and more odd looking tomatoes than their neighbours Costoluto Fiorentino.....

And the Luffa, of course...

Well, I can now confirm - tomatillos do not require growing indoors ! Looking perfectly happy outdoors with lots of fruit coming. Roasted tomatillo & chipotle salsa should be on ...

Just followed your link to Rick - what a very interesting man! I wish we had more chefs like him, over here...he seems on a par with H F-W in his passion and committment to ethical issues around food, recycling, composting etc.

Saw him on Iron Chef and also on Top Chef Masters (which I generally cannot watch because I want to become violent to Jay Rayner). He is an exceptional chef and very innovative.

we have had early success with tomatillos in the past but bad end season weather has always conspired against us getting a good end crop.

Most importantly, he has some great recipes. A good friend and fellow spicy food fan gave me one of his books some years ago; his dishes can be a bit complicated, but they have all been great so far. His "Arroz Amarillo con carnitas" is especially delicious - shoulder pork is simmered in a little water until the water has evaporated and the pork begins to fry in its own fat; onion and rice are then fried with it, then carrot, roasted poblano chillies and an achiote spice paste and water added and the pan covered until the rice is almost cooked, then some peas added to finish.
