He lived well. He died well. What more could anyone ask of a dog?
Or indeed of anyone.

We hadn't said anything but our dog, Nokade, is dead. He had a good long life, 16 1/2, amazingly long for a border collie, and up to last year still able to jump around.

A couple years ago diagnosed with anal gland cancer, already spread, but the vet told us not to worry as that was a very slow sort of cancer and at his age could be expected to go for other reasons first. But from early this winter on he began getting less steady, less active, etc. Probably had we not had our granddaughter's small pup living with us as excitement he might have gone sooner. But in June he more or less stopped eating and after more than a week (he had a previous not eating for a few days but snapped out of it) we took him the the vet. Amaxingly active for a bit, by the time the vet arrived (he was late getting in) he was just lying there and examination indicated very little of his lungs still working. The vet said that if it was a matter of getting family to see him one last time he could give him a stimulant shot making him OK for a day or two but then bring him right in because suffocating as the last lung bits failed an awful way to go. Since the garandkids had all been over to see him that weekend we decided better not take any chances so held him as he had his go to sleep shot. Now buried in the woods up the hill.
