Moulting chickens

default Moulting chickens

Post by Dandelion on 4th September 2011, 3:14 pm

The poorly chicken (who is now much better, but not perfect yet) has now started to moult, to add to her discomfort. Just wondered if anyone had any observations/tips/advice on looking after chickens during their moult? (It did make me laugh yesterday because the chicken in question ran down the garden to meet me, and as she powered along she was leaving a great trail of feathers in the air. It looked as if she was leaving a smoke trail!)

Make sure you are giving extra calcium and protein to help them regrow their feathers faster. I treat mine with extra fruits and veggies and of course the oyster shell is there for them. no different care is required besides that.

I am an animal and nature lover! I raise chickens and children! the 3 dogs and 2 cats are just as spoiled as the kids and chickens

My two Marigolds are now moulting (despite the fact that The Book says that chickens moult in the Spring!) and it's hilarious! It looks as if I've emptied a sack of feathers onto the lawn then used an industrial wind machine to blow them all around! When one of the hens ran down the garden to see me, feathers were flying out and leaving a trail behind her!

My birds always moult at this time of the year. The local show has poultry classes but I never have anything that looks even half decent (there isn't an oven ready class!)

Do you give them anything special to help,Ploshkin? I've been giving them poultry spice for a while, which I'll carry on with.

I don't give them anything, I think that if the birds are healthy they will feather up again quickly. I think they deserve a bit of down time anyway.
