Does anyone else have a problem with slow tomatoes this year? All my plants seemed to be on-track and lots of tomatoes were appearing, but they're all taking forever to go red!

They are outdoors, but then they were last year too and I didn't seem to have this problem then. They're only Gardener's Delight, so nothing exotic, but disappointed with my crop so far this year as a result.

You're not alone Mrs C - my tomato plants (all except three are outdoors) are loaded with fruit but it's determined to stay green. The three inside the 'greenhousy thing' are a bit more advanced but not much. I've got Gardeners Delight, Moneymaker, Ferline and Black Russian, and they're all equally behind. I think when once they do ripen they'll all ripen together!

The curse of the British gardener - Green Tomato chutney.
About 50-60% of ours have ripened now in the polytunnel but none of the outdoor ones have. The problem is our summers of late have been hot and sunny at the start then dull and rainy at the end. If we have an Indian summer and loads of sunshine in September then the rest may ripen.Otherwise it is the dreaded GTC again.

Pick em & put them in a drawer with a ripe banana, that should at least ripen some of them.

I make sure I pick mine daily when watering or at a minimum every other day but I leave one "ripe" one unpicked to extrude the gasses to shift the others along..

If you can, at this time of year a polythene tent over outdoor bush tomatoes can speed things along a bit, and avoid the (otherwise fairly inevitable) onset of blight.

Hmmm - looking out at the horizontal rain it looks like the tomato plants are currently having a bit of a lie down! Woops!
