Selling seeds Empty Selling seeds

Post by Lottie 4th October 2011, 2:44 pm

I was wondering.. is it legal? Laughing

Along with eggs and plants n' stuff, I was wondering about selling little packs of seeds I'd saved from the garden, like cornflowers, marigolds, Hollyhocks etc 50p a throw or something.. and yup, I've left 50 squillion for the birds.. Wink I was just curious as to the legality of it, any ideas? I'd put not F1 etc.. I just don't want to get carted down the nick... Embarassed Shocked

MY understanding is that so long as you are not breaching any propagation licences, you are good to go.

I get the impression that there are more restrictions on vegetable seeds because of EU rules - we have joined the Heritage Seed library which is not allowed to sell seeds, but can offer members a choice of six free packets of seeds when they have paid the membership fee. This gets round the need for the seeds to have been officially registered.

I vaguely remember there being somthing in the U.K. which is why there are lots of "seed swaps" where you "pay to" go in but only swap the seeds... I'll try to have a thunk & look in a couple of places...

I should imagine it will be here http://www.fera.defra.gov.uk/plants/seeds/ or there abouts, you will probably find you cant actually sell the seeds but you could sell the packets to put them in... Wink

Laughing bless you, Spar for finding that out for me.

So I could have a sign, for example saying "Free seeds, 50p for the envelope"? Gawd what a daft law Laughing Won't people think I've lost the plot? Embarassed

Its like kitchen scraps for chickens, it is wrong to feed "scraps of food" that you cooked in the kitchen for humans to chickens, but there is nothing at all wrong with cooking food for chickens in a kitchen & humans eating "the scraps"... Apparently Wink

It's illegal to sell seeds in teh UK unless you are on the register sort fo thing - costs huge amounts of money to do so, hence why the HSL ask you to join, then get the seeds free; ways around it, like the seed swap, or just charge p&P over the net, but enough to cover the seeds too; give them away etc. I just sell mine, though as I want to and will deal with anything if and when it comes up. Sick of all teh red tape b*****ks. I'm such a horticultural rebel.
