Anne McCaffrey Empty Anne McCaffrey

Post by polgara 22nd December 2011, 10:30 am

For those who have read & enjoyed the books of Anne McCaffrey, she went `between` in late November.

Apart from the books of Pern, she wrote & co wrote so many more, including the Crystal Singer Trio & the Freedom books. Her heroines were real & were never just support characters. I shall miss her books & hope that her son carries on with the world of PERN.

Anne McCaffrey Empty Re: Anne McCaffrey

Deeply saddening, I have no idea how this passed me by. Her work was a huge influence on me as a youngling and I frequently return to her Pern novels as an adult, I treasure a letter she sent to me many many years ago.

I too hope that Todd will continue to write in her style and with her soaring imagination...

“Gone away, gone ahead,
Echoes roll unanswered.
Empty, open, dusty, dead,
Why have all the Weyrfolk fled?

Where have dragons gone together?
Leaving Weyrs to wind and weather?
Setting herdbeasts free of tether?
Gone, our safeguards, gone but wither?

Have they flown to some new Weyr
When cruel Threads some others fear?
Are they worlds away from here?
Why, oh, why the empty Weyr?”

I missed it too Adrian, was only that I looked up the dates for Todd`s new book that I found out. I only hope that at some time he finishes the Lessa & F`lar story which she started as Pern settled to no more thread.

A quick search of the Guardian reveals that her passing was mentioned only in the Books section - a sad omission and sign of our shallow times...

I confess I was not a huge fan although I have read most of the early Pern novels. I appreciate the towering figure she was in Fantasy though.
Nice eulogy from her son here:

Some delightful news, Pern will come to the big screen next year..

Sad that Anne would never see her universe on screen, but as a wise man once said, I always preferred books to tv - the pictures are better...

I am not so sure, this was talked about several years ago & Anne herself put a stop to it as she did not like the prelims. I hope Todd has a casting vote both for the script & the casting. This was discussed at great lengths on her old website.

I agree with Adrians quote I always preferred books to tv - the pictures are better...

Oh this guy had Annes Blessing

“The fans and I have been waiting, not so patiently, for a long time to see Pern and her characters on the big screen,” said Anne McCaffrey. “I couldn’t be more thrilled that a writer with David’s tremendous creativity and track record of translating beloved source material into fantastic movies has decided to make this his next epic adventure.” Production is scheduled to begin early 2012. No director is currently attached.
