Blackbirds

For the last couple of years we have had 2 pairs of blackbirds in our little garden

In the spring the males chase each other up & down the wall outside our living room. They are so funny.

When Sparhawk & I are in the garden, they try & part his hair without actually dive bombing him which is really funny

Lady blackbird is fearless, her main occupation is to emptying my pots which is really annoying but fun to watch from about 18ins away.

She listens while I talk to her & tell her off & then carries on I have to laugh, but reward is the singing. How I love to sit & listen to them. Just had to share something that is really special to me. hearts

You're lucky they let you share their lives like that (though the males sound a bit close for comfort sometimes!) We have magpies beaking through the soil in the top of a planted wall so I assume they are after edibles, like your lady blackbird.

Yes I know how lucky I am, perhaps they just sense that I love them so much.

I have a robin which follows me into the Polytunnel in the winter and takes stuff from my hand. I find him (?) grubs and he is very keen to help me eat any pests...

I have had this robin stay with me for hours at a time, he sits and sometimes sings a little bit, but mainly just follows me with his oh so bright and intelligent eye

So yes, I really do appreciate how you feel about your blackbird.

Well the blackbirds have found a way into our shed & are making a nest. How good is that? Have to laugh though as we had just decided to renew the roofing felt this week. Needless to say I told the OH not in a million years untill they have done. They are just so funny to watch. It seems most blackbirds feel the same about me as we were buzzed when we were stood talking somewhere else the other day.

Have seen some bluetits surveying the nest box as well, I also know that a wren is nesting close by.

At the moment the news is good, I think the birds are begining to hatch, mother & father are certainly busy.

Isn't it just such a joy growing your own garden birds. We have one busy pair of bluetits in the nest box nearest the house, although I think the one in the large apple tree near the end of the garden is occupied as well. And we have seen robins going in and out of the broken window in our garage. Not sure if they are nesting, or were just prospecting.

The thing which makes me smile when I'm in the garden at the moment is the song thrush which sits in a nearby tree every afternoon and evening. What makes me smile is the fact that he has incorporated into his song the cry of the buzzard. You get the normal thrush-type song, then in the middle he does a couple of buzzard calls, then it's back to the trilling. It must terrify the other birds. Definitely an alpha male I should think!

The blackbirds are fledging & are running all round the garden chased by the parents. I had to be very careful going into the pots. They have also made a right mess of the hoses that lead to the water butts. Just had an entertaining 5mins watching 1 deciding to fly or to overbalance whichever came first. It flew.

Well the blackbirds are gone. 1 died, but at least 2 made it. They just have to survive the cats now but I am so pleased with that garden crop.

Had a conversation with the lady blackbird today. She was hopping all round me when I was trying to work.

She said thank you for leaving the hanging baskets up so that she could strip the linings off to make her nest. She was also very pleased with the cooked spaghetti I cut up and put in the feeder trays. In fact all the birds were.

Not a lot of flavour though & not as fat as some of the worms we have in the garden.

Well I think my blackies hatched maybe 2 chicks. Have to be careful walking around in the garden at the moment as they are hiding among the pots, nice as it is I sometimes wish they were not so tame, though they do seem to know when to a keep a distance.

We have quite a few fledgelings about at the moment, One dozy blackbird simply sat on the lawn for a day after leaving the nest - lucky not to be found by a cat. Went eventually though. We have some doves which came from a nest wedged between the neighbour's drainpipe and the house wall. A few goldcrests and the usual flock of sparrows.

I bought Mrs C-H a camera equipped bird box for her birthday, so she can do the springwatch bit at home. If anything uses it ...

I watched a dowdy blue tit bathing in our pond (dowdy is our name for the fledglings as the aren't as bright as their parents). It was perched on the pond weed, being so light, but sank a little lower with each flutter of wings. I was poised at the kitchen window, ready to scoop it out of the pond if it got into trouble, but after a couple of attempts, flew away safely
