Spoon Carving Empty Spoon Carving

Post by Adrian 2nd January 2010, 7:53 pm

I have wanted to learn this craft for yeas, but only recently acquired the Frosts Mora carving and Crook knives (40th pressie from my sweet baby sister). Then time and tasks kept me busy until this holiday season.

So finally I cut some birch and start teaching myself - then I watched some youtube videos and learned how to do it properly.

This is my second attempt at spoon carving.

Can I be honest and say I like that more than your first? It has more character.

Don't be so hard on yourself, I wouldn't call it dreadful!

The point is now you're more familiar with your tools & materials you can start to inject the extra little nuances of character that make these things really special & unique to you.

I wouldn't dare show you my firast efforts....but maybe the one I am doing now....?

Anyway...ANY thing carved by hand, with love, is of value and precious...and the one I see in you post is lovely Badger...

I must finish the one I am working on...its made from a huge twisted bit of Honeysuckle...and is very lovely to see...hopefully I have not ruined it, even if I haven't actually enhanced its looks..... Rolling Eyes

Attempt number three.

I feel that I have developed a more controlled technique with the crook knife and can carve deeper and smoother.

I just need to tramp out into the snowy woods and cut more birch for the next series of attempts...

Have you found yourself a new tree to fell yet B? I think maybe you should have a crack at making yourself and hubby some kuksas in birch. You'll likely get blisters in the process but boy will you learn a lot about the wood & knife control as you go along.

I just wanted to share these tasmanian silky oak salad servers that my stepdad made me for my birthday. I love them and wouldn't mind trying this myself sometime https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=1544187&l=11e5bae5d8&id=1208665880

Silky oak is beautiful, and Tasmanian is the best Smile I have a lovely dresser made from the same wood.

Thanks Badger they are on my "wish list". I am very keen that more people should make wooden spoons, not sure why.... other than that they are beautiful and simple...as yours illustrates.
