default Unexpected residents !

Post by Chilli-head on 13th July 2013, 4:51 pm

C-H Jnr has been eyeing up a space behind some overgrown holly and viburnum as a good spot in the garden to try out some cub inspired shelter/den building.  Seemed like a harmless enough idea;  the only thing in the way is an old hedgehog house bought for me by DW a few years and never occupied.  Or so I thought.  I'd just move it to a better spot at the other side of the garden and see if it attracted more interest there.

I picked it up to be greeted by a rather angry buzzing, and then a few bees started to emerge.  I can tell you that I put it back down pretty sharpish !  There are some kind of bumble bees in there - not the big buff tailed ones, but black with a brownish hairy back, no longer than a honey bee but more plump.  Actually, they seem pretty peaceful.

So, do I leave them alone and cancel den building plans,  or try to move them as planned ? I'd hate to do anything that harmed them though (or me,  for that matter !).

I wondered if the bees were mining bees, specifically Tawny mining bees. They have quite a bright brown back, and are honey bee size. If that's what they are, they live in holes in the ground - I don't think they would be a problem to den building.
