Hydroponics Empty Hydroponics

Post by Chilli-head 23rd May 2014, 5:50 pm

Following on from the discussion about self watering pots, what do you folk think of hydroponics ?

I am in two minds about it. On one hand, it seems almost the antithesis of organics to do without soil completely - even if the nutrients are nominally "organic". But on the other, our local chilli farm, Edible Ornamentals swear by hydroponics, and offer both equipment and courses. The yields possible look like a very efficient use of precious greenhouse space. I could do with a bigger crop of peppers, so I'm very tempted to give it a go. Any thoughts ?

Hydroponics Empty Re: Hydroponics

Never tried it CH. I see no reason why it shouldn't be successful, but produce is only one aspect of gardening for me. It is equally important to me to be outside, noticing the bugs, bees and birds, smelling the smell, getting down and dirty - being part of it all. Somehow, hydroponics seems very sterile and I can't imagine ever wanting to try it. I would imagine, though, that if you like a scientific approach, it could be a fascinating way to grow things.

I have a feeling that the West Midlands here is quite a centre for hydroponics (lots of places where you can buy the kit) but let's just say that most of the people who use it aren't growing tomatoes...

I'm like Freebird, I like the outside bit. If the weather was reliable I wouldn't bother with a greenhouse. I don't think I would be sufficiently organised for hydroponics.
