I often make wine and this year made elderflower and grapefruit and rhubarb.....

All went well, stopped fermenting and was racked off, tasted amazing.....but was cloudy.....
So I put it all out in my workroom....no heating outside room..... as wine book said that should help.....
2 months later still cloudy.....HELP!!!!

Is the cloudiness affecting the taste would be my first question? Presentation always comes a late third place after alcohol content and flavour to me.

You can buy finings in homebrew places, often isininglas (also good for preserving eggs) which will clear cloudiness from wine.

Never bothered me overly though. After the second bottle of Schloss Rhomboid I can rarely focus on what's in my glass and everything is looking a bit cloudy anyway.

Egg shells ?
Or some other fining agent of choice.

Or
Bottle it in some sparkling wine bottles with well wired stoppers (Or plastic fizzy pop bottles) and leave it somewhere warm for 6 months.
Rhubarb is a great ingredient for making sparkling wine, it's possible your wine hasn't cleared because it hasn't yet finished working.

Have done as suggested.....drinking the rhubarb as I type!.....its finished working and in danger of getting too dry!!! Actually its smashing....best I've made and nice and pink too!

The Elderflower and grapefruit is wonderful....made with champagne yeast....will rack it off again.....into lemonade bottles....!

Ohh, my rhubarb wine isn't at all pink. It's totally clear and very pale coloured

Tastes fine though, but I would have liked it to be pink Laughing


I had some elderberry brewing away in the shed as no room in the kitchen and I thought it had stopped fermenting but half an hour after bringing it inside it's been bubbling away again so I guess I should leave it a bit longer before racking it off?

chef2 May I reccomend to those who havent tried it both Sloe and/or Bullace wine,The best and most Successful I,ve ever Brewed , always had best remarks of all my wines by Judges in Shows ,and when I made a wine I would put one bottle away and leave it as my Vintage collection , I made a Brew of sloe/Bullaceevery Year each of my Sons was born and put one bottle away and then opened it on their respective 18th birthdays WOW most beautiful ,Ambrosia . :biglick: Hope You try it .

We used to make bullace and sloe wine in our last house because we had so many sloe bushes but couldn't afford the gin to make sloe gin - even if we had it would have been enough for several dozen bottles which is a bit OTT. So we made sloe wine and bullace wine instead. And very nice it was indeed.
We also used to mix together at final racking sloe, elderberry and blackberry wines to make a mixed hedgerow brew which was superb. I find blackberry wine a bit cloying on its own, but mixed with the deep body of the elderberry and the dryness of the sloe it was a great success.

We haven't made any since we moved her, but this year we will again - our field is ringed with blackthorn and we are once again too impecunious to afford spirits. Thanks for the reminder, Worzel.

Dear Wil,
In My opinion the next best wine to make, only losing by a short head is Banana and Broad Bean which You can get very cheap when they are going past their best in a Greengrocers a beatiful smooth taste. beer and both that and sloe/bullace make all the variations and are just as good thats Dry, Medium , Sweet and Dessert ,Just a little aside I had under a half a Demijohn of Sloe/Bullace decided to put a bottle in a local Show,
:bigsmile: it won Best in Show got a lovely Rosette and went to pick up what was left after the judges had had their tasters only to find someone had pinched the bottle ,some Security ,the lady in Charge offered to give me a cork and empty Show Bottle ,I refused and never went in that show again . :bigcry: Happy Dayze .
As a P.S.I would like to thoroughly reccomend the MARGUERITE PATTEN ' Book very reasonably priced if they are still in print one of the 500 Recipe Series 'HOME MADE WINES AND DRINKS' Tells any New wine Maker everything you should want to know
