Alternative to Vermiculite?

default Alternative to Vermiculite?

Post by Sparhawk on 9th January 2010, 9:21 pm

The past couple of months magazines have been getting ready for this years growing season & nearly all are recommending planting various seeds in pots & covering with a thin layer of vermiculite, having thought about this in a particularly dull moment while having to have a 'work break' (occupational hazzard I suppose!!!)

I wondered whether tea leaves from used tea bags would be a good alternative...

Having just looked at a couple of bits on the www. I think they would have nearly the same properties plus being a darker colour would absorb a bit more warmth.

A downside may be that tea leaves would draw more water & become a bit of a mass...

I think that you would run a very high risk of damping off seedlings if you use tealeaves

Badger is correct, I have tried this as an experiment for exactly that reason and most died....
