I have this ever increasing list of things I can't seem to grow adequately. I worry one day there might be little left I can grow. I thought you were supposed to get better with experience ?

Current problem is lettuce. In a dry season, it bolts. In a wet season, the slugs get it. If I cover it, the birds are kept off and don't eat it, but the slugs are left to do so undisturbed. If I don't cover it, the birds help to control the slugs, but the pidgeons eat the lettuce too. Loose leaf cut and come again types are not so bad, but those crisp Cos style lettuce I'm struggling with. Help ! How do you grow yours ?

Ha ha - with all the same problems as you, CH. Complete lettuce failure this year. After losing four separate sowings to drying out at the seedlings stage, I just gave up. When I do manage to get them into the ground I only ever grow the non-hearting varieties, as they last longer for just the two of us.

The one problem I haven't really had this year is slugs and snails. Much less damage than usual. I guess it's the dry conditions we've had this season.

Oh, I feel so much better. I was feeling rather inadequate because I never seem to manage to get a constant supply of lettuce, which really ought to be easy. I'm pretty rubbish at successional sowing because I just don't remember. When I did remember to sow lettuce seeds this year they either didn't germinate or shriveled up in the hot sun. In the past I have found that Lollo Rosso seem to do well outside and don't bolt. Mostly, I do lettuce in troughs in the greenhouse and either do cut & come again or Little Gem that I can use all in one go.
