Jacket Progress Empty Jacket Progress

Post by Ploshkin 10th January 2016, 10:51 am

I've been taking advantage of the relentless rain and staying indoors getting on with my jacket. I've attached a couple of progress pictures. I did a mock up first (aka muslin or toile) in plain calico to correct any fitting issues. Apart from the pattern being designed or an orang utan with an Arnold Schwartznegger upper body the rest was fine. I cut out the fabric, which is Donegal tweed bought in Donegal last year, on New Year's Day and have spent the intervening time doing all the front canvasses and taping which are all hand stitched. As the time consuming handwork all gets hidden I thought I would post a picture (I actually took them to remind myself of what I did in case I decide to do it again). The direction, length, density and tension of the stitches all help to shape the collar & lapels and makes the fabric roll in the desired direction. There will also be some canvas across the top of the back piece and in the collar. The first picture has gone on sideways I think but you will get the gist Jacket Progress P1010718Jacket Progress P1010719Jacket Progress P1010720

Looking impressive, Ploshkin.
Have you got instructions for all of this tailoring stuff or are you remembering from when you did it before?
And do you have anyone to help with fitting, or have you a mannequin adjusted to your size?

Very impressed. I'm still struggling with a cardigan I started knitting a year ago, sewing up the seams. I am not in your league Ploshkin!

Yes, I'll be interested to watch this progress. Well beyond my abilities. The only attempt to make clothes I've done was knitting a jumper - but I gave up and got my mother to finish it after doing half or the back Embarassed

My recollections of the processes were rather hazy Flobear so I employed the services of a good book plus a few bits and bobs from t'internet. I found a really good online supplier for all the hair canvas and stuff.

The jacket is getting there slowly, I only really get to sew in fits & starts but the outer is now constructed & I have got the lining cut out ready to go

I know you wanted something 'interesting' for the lining, Ploshkin. Are you keeping it as a surprise, or do we get a sneak preview of the fabric you've chosen?

Finally - it's finished! Actually, it has been 98% finished for weeks but hanging on a hanger while I searched for buttons which is always a troublesome task with no haberdashery shops anywhere round. I just keep bits of fabric in my pockets in case I happen across a shop somewhere that sells buttons.

Wow. What a tidy job ! Looks very professional. The collar sits nicely and the buttons are a good match.

Your comments about buttons remind me of my mum's button box. A wooden box with a sliding lid that my dad made for her, in which she collected all the buttons cut off old clothes etc for reuse one day. Finding the right number of matching buttons was a job often delegated to me or my sister !

I can make wooden toggles, if you don't mind the Paddington look Laughing

Lovely job, Ploshkin. I can see why you wanted to keep the lining under wraps now. It makes a great element of surprise.

It's beautiful!!

I can sympathise with the button dilemma - I finished knitting my cardi (it only took me a year!!) but couldn't get any buttons. Hobbycraft is easy for me to get to as I can park in a disabled space outside and get in without too much difficulty, but they have recently decided to discontinue their range of buttons. They were still selling them at the rather expensive original price, but there were only two or three of every type of button. (If the stocks had been better, it would have cost me nearly ten pounds for the buttons!!) In the end I took a gamble and bought some sight unseen from Amazon. They were perfect (and cost less than £2 for ten buttons!)

Ooh, Ploshkin, that looks terrific bouncing Are you keeping it for 'posh' or wearing it out and about? Not for mucking out animals, I realise that!

And well done Dandelion on getting the cardi. finished. It's a lovely colour. I always though Hobbycraft buttons expensive too.

My mum had a button tin and I have one of my own. All the buttons that are in sets are threaded on to yarn and tied up. Trouble is the sets get tangled up!

I intend getting some wear out of the jacket Flobear which is why I picked a casual style. If it was for posh it would get worn about once every three years, if that
I love the colours of your knitting, Dandelion and the buttons are spot on. I used to love playing with my grandmother's button box which was a massive cardboard box, full to the brim. I bet it had some fabulous vintage buttons in it - wouldn't I love to have them now.

Same here - my grandmother's button tin had some lovely 1940s buttons (sort of Art Deco) in it. I thought they were a bit dreary at the time...
