if i cant get these i get lohmann browns but black rocks are the buiz
i went into a pet shop and asked for grit for chooks and was given pigeon grit

grit is grit, Gunners, it serves the same purpose and is made up of the same stuff. Pigeon grit is probably a bit more expensive but other than that same stuff.

Hmmm I would have thought pigeon grit would be more like chick grit in size? Chick grit is too small for its purpose in an adult bird, though, and so not as good for grinding up food in the gizzard of an adult bird...?

Which is what the insoluable grit is for. Or small stones, which is what ours seem to like better. From off the gravel drive......quite alarming the size of the stones they want to eat...!

And yes want to see picks of the new girls Dave! I like Black Rocks/Stars...I have several and they are good layers and nice friendly birds...

i have four bootiful black rocks a couple weeks off laying i have a coop with a vent i have it wide open do i shut it totally at night or just leave it open a bit pls could you let me know asap for tonite its the only ventilation ta

Leave it open a bit or a lot, depending on weather you shut the pop hole as well..., as long as the birds can't get out...its not going to be very cold and they need ventilation more than the warmth.

I leave the hen house pop hole open all the time, except when the temp dips below - 12 C

well they had 24 hrs in coop been let out into run and came within 10 mins one seems a bit shy coming out and back in feed water gritn oyster now in run will be took in at night one they got use to that run then i let them in to free range area, i am a bit aprehensive about getting them back into coop as its their first time will they know what to do i hope so or i not sure what to do ???

Dave, get them so they come for food to you, and make a call ( or rattle the feed or something) everytime you feed them, so they link you, the same sound and food ( useful to have a sound, so if someone else has to get them in, they can make it as well!)

Then let the girls out late in the afternoon for the first time to free range, and go back with their food at dusk, making the call to get them back inside the run etc. They should soon get the idea!

Are their wings clipped?

Ours just seem to instinctively seek shelter when it gets dark. if there is no other shelter but the coop that's where they will go.

I really can't be faffed wandering around clucking at the wretched things.

Maybe not, but if they are very free rranging, or you are not there and someone else has to do it, it has advantages.

Note, I DID not mention clucking at them, just using the same noise each time until their feeble bird brains get the idea "noise" = "food"

I shouut "chook, chook chooook" to them and rattle the feeder....someone else I know shouts "grub up" ....

At the moment my Wife goes to tuck up her little ones and she has learnt to use the tin and corn to get them in and thats if they are not already in thee coop.
DW gets to the allotments just before it gets dark and she may only have 1 or 2 to put in,

Oh and as to grit and the like .
I was told that you could use the egg shells as long as they have been baked in the oven for more than 15 min at at lest 220c.
I've used it when we had run our of oyster shell.
