How many different uses for.......old socks Empty How many different uses for.......old socks

Post by freebird 20th October 2013, 8:22 am

I tried and tried to think of other uses for Chilli Head's biscuit tins, but failed miserably. But old socks - isn't there always an odd one lurking in a drawer that has lost it's partner forever. Here are some of the things I've used them for:
1) My motorcycle crash helmet has interchangeable visors, so I keep the one I'm not using in one of the man's old sports socks - perfect fit!
2) The dog had a badly cut pad, which it was impossible to stitch, or keep a dressing on. Another of the man's old sports socks used as a stocking over her back leg, fastened above the hock with tape, kept it clean while it was healing.
3) A couple of buttons for eyes, maybe some felt ears - hey presto, a glove puppet (or should that be sock puppet?)

Any more?

I was once given half a dozen quail eggs to incubate and only one hatched.  I don't know if you have ever seen a quail chick but they are so tiny I didn't know quite what to do with it.  I put it in a little cardboard box & cut the toe off a woolly sock to make it a cave to cwtch up in.  Dan (quail) loved it & thrived & grew into a lovely bird.  He turned out to be a she & was a prolific layer for 3 years.  I bought a couple of other quail for company.  Sadly they were all killed by a rat one night when I'd had to move them into temporary accommodation.

Cut off th tops ewn together to make a draught excluder.

Handy mitts for outside work, or sleeve protecters.

Fill cotton socks with porridge oats & tie to the bath tap.

I save particularly grim old socks for cleaning the edges of the ceiling. OK, such deep cleaning doesn't happen more than once or twice a year, which is why there are always lots of cobwebs to get rid of. I put an old holey sports sock onto the end of a broom, and wind all the cobwebs round it - just like nasty candyfloss!!

I was going to say as a glove when car waxing.

Another use - storing metal woodworking planes. They prevent dings to the metal casting, and with a light spray of WD40, protect from rust.

Not around here. We do have socks that have holes in them and are in need of another use than wearing. But at that stage we are talking about uses for small pieces of cloth/rag. And small numbers of them at that.

Why not as many odd socks, the mates of ones that bit the dust as described above? Well around here that matelessness is a temporary condition except for the last man standing (the last of that sort in the drawer). Always buy socks at least three pair the same color and pattern (if any). On sock dies, OK, now that's two pair to wear and one lonely one. But sooner or later one sock of those two pair still in use dies so the lonely one finds a new mate, still two pairs. One of those socks dies and you still have a pair plus a spare, and so forth.

It also makes pairing up after wash day easier to have only a relatively small number of different socks as mating can be more promiscuous. Keep in mind that I am usually pairing up my own socks and I am partially color blind. So in addition, none that differ only by some color difference that I can't distinguish.

Oh Mike! Trust you to have a virtually fool proof system. Although I firmly believe that the man could still manage to make odd socks, even doing it your way.

Mr P only ever wears H & J Commandos in black so no odd sock problem there - a hangover from his bachelor days.
