Rhomboid Acres - Page 3 Empty Re: Rhomboid Acres

Post by Wilhelm Von Rhomboid 5th July 2010, 8:08 pm

Wait till you seen the piggies on Wednesday. They are gorgeous.

Bea had a serious talk to me this afternoon on the way to the agricultural suppliers.
"Daddy, I hope you understand that we are not going to eat our pigs."
"Of course we are. that's the whole point of having them."
"No, you can buy bacon in the supermarket. Our pigs are jolly."
"But supermarket meat is horrid and is from very unjolly pigs."
"Hmmm. Well you can go to a Farmer's Market."

and so it went on. Eventually we reached a compromise that we would eat our pigs but would use codewords for bacon and pork while around them so that it would be a secret.

We had friends whose little son earnestly said one day 'Isn't it funny that there are two things called chicken: the meat you eat on Sunday, and the bird which runs around at the farm?'

Have I mentioned that I simply adore Little Miss Bea?

Any chances on you and Mrs R adopting a slightly used, extremely mature and relatively well-behaved fourth child? Rhomboid Acres - Page 3 970521

Just caught up with this Billy. Sounds like you are making good progress (nothing happens overnight) and I just hope that if you are putting in fencing posts that the bees don't get too shirty with you. We had 3 or 4 hives in our top field (the bees were "on tack" with us, so to speak, and we got a "bee rent" of honey and wax). Unfortunately we had some fencing done, and the bees attacked the contractor, who was not at all amused . . .

Is it next weekend the wee pigs arrive? That should please the neighbours . . Oh, and one of my pet hates (apart from decking) is people who take over the verges or whatever near their home and mow them like they are lawn. I prefer to see the wild flowers (until the council trash those too).

I would imagine a dozen light Sussex cockerels strutting their collective stuff will please the neighbours too. Rhomboid Acres - Page 3 Empty Re: Rhomboid Acres

Post by Wilhelm Von Rhomboid 7th July 2010, 6:53 pm

Well, we have the first of the pigs. Bea and I popped down to collect them at lunchtime.

Went fairly smoothly except for one incident while carrying the piglets to the car. First off the piglets were a bit bigger than I remembered and a bit heavier than I expected -30kg+ in fact. Which is a fair old weight when it is wriggling and thrashing in your arms.

And screaming.

My God can pigs scream!

Which was not so good as the path from pen to car went past the enclosure where their mother lives. Having only had her piglets weaned off a week ago, she became quite enraged hearing her babies screaming thei
r lungs out and seeing them being dragged struggling past.

So she did what any mother would do in the circumstances.

Mother pig is huge. I mean HUGE. Like a hippopotamus.

And she came at full charge. Straight through the electric fence. Straight through the stock fence. Straight towards me, bellowing with rage and snapping those very big jaws.

Gentle reader, I dropped that piglet like a hot potato and ran away.

Luckily order was restored with a bucket of feed and we got the rest of the piglets into the car without incident.

Although I must say, even with the roof and all the windows open, 4 pigs in a car raise a powerful fug.

Anyway, enough rambling, here's what you want to see, the piggie piccies:

Forgot to post this the other day.

The first harvest from Rhomboid Acres:

YUUMMM!!!! Someone has been snaffling honeycomb

Rhomboid Acres - Page 3 Img_4022

Much spinning later. Doesn't look like a lot but the spinner is deceptively large

Hooray for honey!!

End result 1: just over 2 gallons of honey

Mucho impressivo.
What's with the sock? Is it to ward off bee attack or for some other, much more, significant reason. Such as impersonating Michael Jackson or to stop aliens attacking or something else?

If I'd thought of it sooner he wouldn't have gorged himself with nearly so much honey.

Either that or we would have had sock-infused honey.
