Salad Leaves - what are you favourites? Empty Salad Leaves - what are your favourites?

Post by Guest 12th April 2010, 9:55 pm

I grow my salad crops in the sandy beds outside. In summer it gets too hot for lettuce so I'm always looking around for other ideas and love just picking leaves off as it reduces the slug problem.

So far my very favourite is red salad bowl as it survives into June and is mild flavoured. The variety Batavia is the lettuce that I prefer.

I also have tried chicories (self balancing) - too strong flavoured and frissy (endive?) but never managed to blanch without having slugs infesting it.

I tried mizuna and pack choi one year and lost them all to something... this time seeding pak choi red leaf in the green house and then planting out.

What great flavours have you found in the land of the salad leaves? garden

Red/green salad bowl, mizuma, giant red mustard, pak choi, wild rocket.

Those do us for 6 months of the year....

ooo pea shoots and bean shoots..forgot those! also baby spinach and chard and brassicas....

Also I sprout stuff all year round...does that count?

Oh dear, does that make me a sad bean sprout eater...? I guess it does... Salad Leaves - what are you favourites? Icon_biggrin

but I hate wheatgrass juice...so maybe that cancels it out? Salad Leaves - what are you favourites? Icon_biggrin

From a practical point of view, I like cos variety lettuce - we have a lot of annoying little slugs, so I grow lettuces in copper rings, which works even better with upright varieties as there are no leaves flopping over the edge of the copper ring for slugs to gain access.
Am experimenting with a handful of last years lettuce and rocket seeds sown in a trough to make my own salad leaf mix

Rocket, baby spinach, the red leaves that I grew from seeds Billy gave me a couple of years ago(can't remember what it was but it was lovely) Very Happy, general mixed lettuce leaves, flat leaf parsley

Have got a tray of peas waiting to sprout ready for pea shoots, which I've yet to try

I like wild rocket, beetroot leaves (bull's blood is good), cos lettuce for crunch. I really dislike those dreadfully bitter endives the French seem to serve as a garnish 🤢

Lardon, poached egg and foie gras - quite a salad. I'll try it if I can have a half bottle of Sauternes to wash it down Very Happy

Its down to the blancing..which is difficult to do without slugs. It can be very refreshing in hot summer when done well and the good bit goes into the salad and the dark bits get used a garnish!

Sparhawk, thats one advantage of picking leaves. You reduce the slug problem as there are no leaves on the ground and you are picking each day unlike a lettuce picked in heart that has been left several weeks for the slugs to move in.

Another to add to the list is Italian Giant leaf parsley. Once grown it will keep appearing and has a lovely sweet flavour that can be added to mixed salads.
