I was wondering if anyone else had any experience/passion for this? I have been felting old jumpers and then creating wool longies for my kids a couple of warm neck rolls and even some fingerless gloves. I would love to make a jumper/jacket for my three year old as well. I would post some piccys but my camera has gone walkabout! I have also made some shopping bags from old t-shirts, i simply sew up the bottom the cut off the neck area and sleeves - Perfect bag!
Cheers

My T shirts are usually too worn to reuse, but they do make nice soft dusters, dish cloths etc.

When kids were smaller used to make things out of old jumpers, but felted, cut & sew

OH! I really like felting, it has become so much of a passion my search for second hand woollens has taken over my sewing table!

Sounds good, just that in my younger days, crafty things like we do now were not exactly the in thing. We were still in the make do & mend time. lol!

Wel Pol I'm all for bringing that back, you know if my shoe is broken...fix it! don't just go out and buy new shoes. I have two little children who I am desperate to teach some really good old fashioned values to and I don't want consumerism to be their whole world. So I made my three year old boy some new pj pants today out of an old t-shirt my sister was throwing away. And you know what the more I do things like this the better I feel about my mark on the world Upcycling woolens, t-shirts etc 523221

I think you're going to fit in here just fine BJM with an attitude like that! Very Happy

I regularly despair when I see people throw stuff away that can so easily be re-used or re-purposed. Sadly so many people my age and younger have no skills though to turn one thing into another and no vision or passion to do so either. Incredibly sad.

Now I am just showing off and tying to impress my new friends Smile These are some of the nappies I have made for my baby from upcycled sheets, blankets and dresses I have found around.

They look really good. My 'babies' are all taller than me now - I battled on with real nappies when they were little; would have loved to have some like the ones you made. (I dyed some of the terry nappies which were still in one piece by the time the third baby had used them, and they are very useful as little hand towels. They are also good for swaddling the guinea pigs in when their claws are cut, but I don't suppose everyone needs to do this.....)

Ours (Neville and Chompy) are a bit more feral than that (nobody wanted to buy them, so they stayed in the pet shop for a long time and began to hate humans.) I didn't realise any of this when I bought them.....

Fudge really is an all-round cute GP!!

Wow, wow, wow! I'm very impressed! :bigclap:

My first baby is due on Saturday (so in other words any day within the next couple of weeks!) so probably no time to start making nappies like that now, but I would be very interested if you have a rough pattern anywhere. I have managed to get some third-hand reusable nappies from someone local that I plan to use that are newborn sized. If I get on OK with them then I'll look for doing something similar once Baby C is a bit bigger.

I went to a session on reusable nappies that the recycling officer of our local council ran and was amazed at the choice available. Lots of cool looking ones too, but some very expensive. Have seen a pattern in a SouleMama book, but for something much simpler than what you have there.

Very well done you. This is one new friend that's very impressed!

Mrs C, Congrats in advance for your little ones arrival, it is a very exciting time (although you are probably just feeling impatient by now) with the expense of the fitted I would use this rule of thumb - don't spend more on a nappy than you would spend on a pair of shoes! (not sure how it converts but I have seen people pay as much as $60 Australian for one nappy)

Here are a few links for you when you have time Smile

For fitted nappies - http://fernandfaerie.com/sewing_fitteds.html (you can use flannelette as well)

For nappy covers - http://www.chloetoesboutique.com/full_cover.pdf

More nappy tutorial/pattern -http://handmadebyrita.blogspot.com/2007/10/classic-rrp-ritas-rump-pocket-pattern.html

A good resource -http://www.diapersewing.com/

That should e enough to get you started!

As for the guinea pig issue...I love guinea pigs, I raised my own brood as a ten year old but when I saw a mother eat one of her babies that was enough for me Upcycling woolens, t-shirts etc Icon_cry

Wow BJM your nappies look fab!

I've got my little'un in bumgenius washables, but am feeling a bit like we're missing out now we've seen home made ones in all these fantastic fabrics! I especially love the hand made by rita patterns you've shared above. Must get round to finding myself a sewing machine one of these days.

What do you do for a waterproof outer?

Oh wow - thanks for all those links BJM! I think I may need to spend a little more on Baby C's bottom than I do on shoes. I'm not exactly a shoe fan and only recently bought some new ones as my existing ones wouldn't fit on mu swollen feet any more. Even then I have to admit (very badly) that I only spent £8 on them from the supermarket. I know that they will have come from somewhere awful and I feel really bad about that, but I couldn't find anything in the right size in any charity shop nearby and I was getting desperate and will not need them for long. Embarassed

Yep - just feeling impatient at the moment. Hadn't realised just how much I'd feel that by this stage. Still - only two more weeks at most and then they'll induce me.

BB - one of mine is just flannelette and I use a PUL (Polyurethane laminate) fitted cover for outside. The others I have made with the PUL layer in the middle of the nappies so they are all in one's.

Mrs C - Seriously if you are making nappies from upcycled material/clothes you have around the house the you shouldn't need to spend more than eight pounds on them (haha I don't even have a pounds sign on my keyboard) and I lived in some birkenstock type slip on shoes I paid about the same or less for until a few weeks ago from around three months pregnant, my feet were so swollen!
