Mastercrafts cancelled
Monty Don mourns his BBC sacking
Insurrection at Hay. Festival director Peter Florence has asked for festival goers to bombard Mark Thompson, director general of the BBC, with letters to complain about the pulling of Monty Don’s last BBC2 show, Mastercrafts, which featured blacksmiths and thatchers explaining their niche trades.
Don, left, gardener and head of the Soil Association, movingly described the depression he had been suffering from during a talk yesterday, before revealing that the BBC has dispensed with his services as a presenter.
“Dream Farm will certainly be done without me because I haven’t been asked and I learned yesterday that Mastercrafts is not going to be repeated or renewed,” said Don. “I’m pretty devastated.”
Re: Mastercrafts cancelled
Grrrr, typical BBC, its not as if we are over run with crafty type programmes as you can tell from the Whats On section...
I guess it was too educational for most of todays average couch potatoes, I am also sorry to see about the depression... I guess gardening wouldn't be too much of a release for him...

Is it not always the way? Something that is a bit specialist does not pull in enough viewers, so we will ditch it for another "reality" programme.

Re: Mastercrafts cancelled
Very depressing - if this decision has been taken because crafts are supposed to be too exclusive then the decision makers have missed the fact that so much of the Mastercrafts programmes were about people - what makes them tick, how they interreact with others, how they react to a new set of circumstances etc. So of interest to everyone.

Re: Mastercrafts cancelled
When you considering that courses run by Guy Mallinson, Mike Abbott and Sophie Hussain are booked solid this year as a result of the series, you would think that the Beeb would understand the pull that traditional crafts have.
Very depressing to see them drop this so quickly.

Maybe it is something to do with Monty's health??? I don't know...
If it because of minority viewing perhaps he should try BBC2...
Whatever the future, though, he made a difference with what he has done so he should be pleased with himself.

There is now a campaign to get BBC to change their mind. See the nice banner top left of the forum and click on Monty to find out more.

Re: Mastercrafts cancelled
In the alternative, can we not come up with a better adea for a programme?
Look at what's popular, and make it useful.
Mastercrafts Acadamy, or Strictly come crafting.

Re: Mastercrafts cancelled
Well all the people I have had come to my wood for courses have gone on about the loveliness of camp fires and being in a wood and cooking over a fire...so why not a 3 day (weekend) outdoors reality TV show, real time...where they have to cope without mobiles and electricity and they have to gather the wood they want to use to cook with...if they want hot food as opposed to the cold rations they are given
and errect their own tarp shelters....if they want to sit in the dry...no tents etc!
they get basic food, water, loo roll, a toilet and washing facilities ( about as basic as at a festival...!) a waterproof sleeping bag etc BUT have to make their own "comforts" ( hot food - they need to light a fire, more comfortable shelter - they need to erect a tarp overhead...etc)
I would LOVE to host something like that.....have so many ideas for a format!

Yep, why not?
might work, just think of how many people really love going to festivals and "slumming it"...camping, dirt, fires etc etc ...its the getting away from the norm which appeals....

Ah the luxuries of modern life,
when I were a lad & we went to camp,
after pitching the tent the first task that was given out was the digging of the bog,
&
what a way for people to learn the difference between a dock leaf & a stinging nettle or thistle...

Re: Mastercrafts cancelled
Well...my toilet is a simple commode in a toilet tent, which gets emptied either down the loo in the house (if brown) or put on the compost (if yellow) I am planning a composting loo but that is for the autumn, as a workshop....
I do not actually want people randomly "going" in the wood as it upsets the ground ecosystem by adding in high Nitrogen material, nor do I want them digging a sh1t pit, for the same reason.
A commode type loo seems the simplest solution to these issues, especially as we have a septic tank and a soak away system which feeds the trees in the wood anyway...so putting it all doen the loo ends up in the ground , eventually

Re: Mastercrafts cancelled
If people are daft enough to still get stung in my wood after my H and S talk, identifying nettles, etc...its their issue not mine
its a WOOD....and thats why you have to sign a disclaimer, before I let you on the site...

Re: Mastercrafts cancelled
S'funny, that. There is always the assumption that a 'professional' must by definition be better than an amateur. Yet the amateur is usually not constrained by deadlines, clients with more money than taste or the need to make a living at their chosen craft. To quote Wikipedia, "Amateur comes from a French word meaning Lover of". In my previous field, I know plenty that make their main income through second rate work, and others who do exquisite things but just for the love of it.Chilli-head wrote:Interesting.Ricochet wrote:
