I scanned the web page and wondered what the "mating types of blight scouts" had to do with it all...

My blight avoidance strategy is also because we get Colorado beetle so I plant as early as possible eg 1st-2nd week in march. The problem then is to protect from frost - but that is possible. The crop benefits from the spring rains too.

We plant early and early maincrop, by end Feb/start of March, cover the ground with geotextile until the green shoots emerge, then earth up and use fleece if it is still frosty.

We will lift all our spuds fairly soon and they will last us until early April. We have been eating the outdoor earlies for some time now, and I always grow a good number in the polytunnel in bags and buckets so we start harvesting those in May.

Doing it this way, I can avoid buying spuds for at least 10 months out of the year

I don't have a greenhouse/poly tunnel, so am vulnerable to blight on tomatoes (I only grow early potatoes). I wondered today if covering the plants would help, as they then won't have rain dripping on the leaves to spead the blight. OH came up with the bright idea of using clear plastic recycling bags (I will wash and reuse them, honest). I have put a bag upside down over each plant, anchoring it with a peg to the cane.

Will it work? Is this a cheap but effective answer? (Cue Dick Barton music...) Tune in next month to find out!!

Mm would have thought it would adversely increase the humidity...which is needed to grow blight, tbh....

In France they sell plastic tube bags to go over the tomato plant but it has perforated holes in it to allow air ciculation. The holes are like a paper hole punch size.

On Alys Fowlers prog last year she built a cupboard around her toms & they were still got, so I would suspect that with holes, the spores would still get through...

I know - I just feel that I ought to try to do something - and if it doesn't work then I'll try something else next year! The weather seems to be caught in a pattern now where it rains like anything just as the tomatoes are beginning to look good.
