I love ginger beer, and we've decided that during the summer holidays we're going to have a go at making our own! I've done the google thing, so heres hoping that in a few weeks I'll have a steady supply of ginger beer....

Erm... messy! Sad I'm not 100% sure what went wrong, but after a couple of days the mix "exploded". I'll have another go soon!

Oh dear....granted, I only let my ginger beer sit overnight and then I put it in the fridge to slow the process down, and keep it there! Maybe you left it at room temp too long?

Wayhey! Ginger beer is sorted! I worked out where I went wrong the first time... 1/2 tablespoons of yeast means HALF a tablespoon, not 1 or 2 tablespoons! (obviously I went for 2!)

Up to the victorian period ginger beer was both gingery and alcoholic, that is until temperance activists got to work on it. I have been telling myself to try to renew the old recipe, and the christmas period will give me the time to do it.

I was wondering if anyone was going to get on to tradional ginger beer, it was really popular I believe.
Wasn't there something special about the yeast or how it was brewed...racking my brain. There is a place in Oswestry that were going to start brewing it.

default Ginger Beer Plant

We remember when we were young that everyone had a ginger beer plant in the kitchen, usually in a milk bottle with a bit of cotton wool in the top. Feed it every day with a bit more ground ginger and top it up and it just kept going. But you have to remember to take some out every couple of days and make the ginger beer. It works out about 1% alcohol. Make it up in a used lemonade bottle and keep it in the fridge for a day so the yeast has chance to work and it turns out really refreshing.

But drink it up! After a couple more days that bottle becomes full of gas and from personal experience I can assure you that it makes an enormous mess in your fridge when it splits or oozes out around the bottle-top.

It is dead cheap to make - all you need is water, sugar, powdered ginger and some bakers yeast, a bottle to start it in and some plastic drink bottles when you are ready to bottle it.

The result is really refreshing and brings back memories of childhood - even if you never had any ginger beer in your childhood.

Ginger beer is, of course, not to be confused with beer which tastes of ginger which is actually quite revolting.
