I should preface this thread with a disclaimer.

I really do want to avoid politicising this forum, I know many good people from all colours of the political spectrum, equally I know many who are not so good, so have until now wanted to avoid political discussions. We are, however, all adults with a common thread in our lives and I believe that common thread brings us closer together than party politics and ideologies drive us apart.

I must declare (as though it will be any shock to any who are facebook friends) that I am of the Left - not New Labour, but the of Bennite Socialist school of thinking and I am immensely proud of my politics.

I have avoided discussing the new coalition government, I did not feel that politics were relevant to the ethos of the site, but I am concerned that the UK is being returned to bad old Thatcherite 80's.

So here is my sole political thread - please, if discussing this topic, try to respect other opinions no matter how heated it make get. Tony Benn - The time to organise resistance is now 958383

It is time to organise a broad movement of active resistance to
the Con-Dem government's budget intentions. They plan the most savage spending cuts since the 1930s, which will wreck the lives of millions bydevastating our jobs, pay, pensions, NHS, education, transport, postal and other services. The government claims the cuts are unavoidable because the welfare state has been too generous. This is nonsense. Ordinary people are being forced to pay for the bankers'
profligacy.

The £11bn welfare cuts, rise in VAT to 20%,
and 25% reductions across government departments target the most vulnerable – disabled people, single parents, those on housing benefit, black and other ethnic minority communities, students, migrant workers, LGBT people and pensioners.Women are expected to bear 75% of the burden. The poorest will be hit six times harder than the richest. Internal Treasury documents estimate 1.3 million job losses in public and private sectors.

We reject this malicious vandalism and resolve to campaign for a radical alternative, with the level of determination shown by trade unionists and social movements in Greece and other European countries. This government of millionaires says "we're all in it together" and "there is no alternative". But, for the wealthy, corporation tax is being cut, the bank levy is a pittance, and top salaries and bonuses have already been restored to pre-crash levels. An alternative budget would place the banks under democratic control, and raise revenue by increasing tax for the rich, plugging tax loopholes, withdrawing troops from Afghanistan, abolishing the nuclear "deterrent" by cancelling the Trident replacement. An alternative strategy could use these resources to: support welfare; develop homes, schools, and hospitals; and foster a green approach to public spending – investing in renewable energy and public transport, thereby creating a million jobs.

We commit ourselves to:
• Oppose cuts and privatisation in our workplaces, community and welfare services.
• Fight rising unemployment and support organisations of unemployed people.
• Develop and support an alternative programme for economic and social recovery.
• Oppose all proposals to "solve" the crisis through racism and other forms of scapegoating.
• Liaise closely with similar opposition movements in other countries.
• Organise information, meetings, conferences, marches and demonstrations.
• Support the development of a national co-ordinating coalition of resistance.

We urge those who support this statement to attend the Organising Conference on 27 November 2010 (10am-5pm), at Camden Centre, Town Hall, London, WC1H 9JE.

Signed:Tony Benn

Personally I think we should be planning the revolution.
Sack the government altogether and build a new one.

I am with you on this one Badger, I have similar politics to you I suspect and WAS a Labour party supporter/member/activist/possible candidate, until "New" Labour took control.

I am a lifelong union member and workers rights activist and have always striven to help my fellow working wo/man

I am deeply deeply perturbed by what is happening in the UK now.

I had a bad experience with a union once.
Have not yet had anything to balance the bad impression I got from it.

The majority of the people voted in Mrs Thatcher in 1979....and they have done it again. And they voted for Blair. And nobody supported Micheal Foot...

The people of Britian voted in the governments we have had (except Brown). Why would they now get off their backsides and resist?

To be fair, they didn't actually voted for this current government, they voted for three different parties and manifestos, but none of them could form a majority.

So far the coalition has implemented policies that appeared in neither Tory or LD manifesto - so the sad reality is that policy that was never voted on is being enacted by a government with no mandate.

I think that the call to action is being made, not so much that these things are being done, but because they are ideological attacks on the welfare state, Cameron has already announced that they will be non reversible when the economy recovers, indicating that these savage cuts are ideological rather than economical as advertised.

The proposed changes to social housing tenancies combined with the abolition of the body that controls private landlords is particularly scary..

In the absence of any other credible choices a country that wanted/needed change, after all the other party had plenty of time to make things work & what was the phrase "put an end to the boom & bust" could only go one way & hope that with 2 parties in a coalition they would keep each other "honest"...

I suppose there is little chance of them being given 10 years to see if they can dig us out of the mire...

I am going to express a very different take on this. Why are you considering this electoral outcome abnormal for a parliamentary democracy? Yes I know in the British historical experience your society was divided inot just 2-3 factions so your elections have been contested by no more than 2-3 parties and you often/usually had a majority winner.

But in much of the world using this form of democracy the socitieis are divided into a larger number of interests and so no single party ever wins even close to a majority. Government is always by coalition entailing compromise with no single interest group ever having a "mandate to rule" roughshod over all the other interests. I consider this outcome the norm for the form "parliamentary democracy". Welcome to the club.

Note the implications. It is hard (useless) to discuss the best form of democracy without taking into account the divisions likely within the democratic group. If you want/expect "mandate to rule" then your society must be divided into very few camps.

If you only give society two camps to divide into, then for the most part, they are the camps it will divide into.
