Greetings from Wiltshire Empty Greetings from Wiltshire

Post by Hathorite 18th August 2010, 9:05 am

Hello there! I surfed on in, directed to this blog by "Compostwoman" (Hathor's Bath here). My situation is a bit "interesting" (possibly in the Chinese curse sense); I'm a disabled single mum with a child with autism, and so having to go simplistic has sort of been a necessity! But it's a bit easier for me as I learned to cook at a very young age, and I lived rough for several years and travelled round the US so making do isn't difficult for me.

I've created a safe sensory garden for my son this year thanks to the help of a very understanding landscaper and some local charities, and I've also been able to do gardening for food for ourselves which turned out pretty good this year. Next year, even more plots and plans in the works! My friends and I (most of us disabled) have found the past few winters where we live rather difficult as the changing, more severe winters is something our council can't seem to deal with and we've been iced in for weeks without being able to get out to do shopping or run errands, so I've been teaching everyone to stockpile, to cook a little extra and share meals around, and I'm well stocked in the medicinal herbal department if the chronic immune issues ever get any of us into a bind.

I was running my own soaping and bath products business but illness forced me to close up this year. I'm concentrating on getting well and slowing down a little bit - even though sproggo's own condition makes that pretty difficult! In the meantime, I cook, have a trade of clean-for-soap-and-luxury-bits with my more able friends, make my own beer and fruit wines, sew, tend my garden, support local farmers by buying local food as and when I can, make bread, and do what I can to try and find new ways to take care of myself and my son even though I only have so many "spoons" in a day.

Cheers and happy living!

Hurrah!

Welcome!

And can I just say how brilliant the "Spoons" article is?

I have trouble explaining about CFS/ME and it helps to use an example like that to explain why I can't always do stuff, even though I look OK , on the outside....

Cheers for the welcome all.

I was selling online and also locally, but right now I need to take a break! I'll be back into things soon and would be happy to supply folks as I'm finding supplying others works a lot better than trying to hold market stalls - takes too much energy out of me and uses way too many spoons.

I'm in the south - nearish to Salisbury, and I'm more than happy to supply folks when I get back into it; I really love soaping and I miss it terribly right now but just can't do it right now. All in good time when I'm able to move around a bit better and some of the pressure is off.

Hello from me too. I used to live near Salisbury (Coombe Bissett) and I worked in Britford, looking after someone's horses. It seems like a lifetime ago now. I still miss the area though.

Thank you for linking to that article - it really opened my eyes. We take our health so much for granted I think. It must be even harder for you with your autistic son. I hope that you are able to get back to the soap-making - it's something I've always wanted to do, but get put off by the thought of the fumes (I have asthma and try to steer clear of strong pongs like that!!)
