Google Ads banner Empty Google Ads banner

Post by AngelinaJellyBeana 13th November 2009, 6:54 am

Hi Badger
I realise the ads are probably necessary but they hide the "buttons" along the top - at least they are doing on my laptop. Can they be moved or do I need to adjust something somewhere? I can only see the very edges of the Forum button and the Log Out one

Yes, it's like that for me too. It's like they've budged up overnight and obscured them (wasn't like that yesterday).

Same here too, as Cow said, it was fine yesterday. Can only see the edge of the 'Forum' and 'Log out' Nothing else so can't access PM's, etc.

Google Ads banner Empty Re: Google Ads banner

Post by Compostwoman 13th November 2009, 9:34 am

I was logged out by the system overnight for some reason and have had a hell of a time logging back in, as I couldn't see the button because of the banner...

Ended up getting in but it took ages....

I am sure that banner wasn't on the front page yesterday...there were ads in the sub pages but not the front?

Bloomin' google...

Just as a note, there is a login area at the very bottom of the main front page, I found it by accident when I was trying to login this morning.

Google Ads banner Empty Re: Google Ads banner

Post by Mike 13th November 2009, 11:38 am

Unless we can fix this can't expect any new people to join. Yes, in desperation I searched thoroughly enough to be able to discover the secondary log in area at the bottom of the page. But otherwise would ahve been unable even to post this.

But how do we get to manage our profiles, get to our PMs, view the member list, etc.?

Is there no control over where this thing appears?s (and BTW, it's not likely to be strictly speaking a "popup" because that I could get rid of at the browser leve;)

Mike, if you go to the "profile" button below your avatar ( and also there is a PM button) you can get into them that way...

I agree with Mike about the new members issue...as you can only work around the Google banner if you are already a member...there is no way ( I think) to actually register except under the top button..

hang on I will log out and check if I am right..

I may be gone some time..... :affraid: Shocked

Google Ads banner Empty Re: Google Ads banner

Post by Compostwoman 13th November 2009, 11:48 am

Well, if you come here to the front page and you are a member, the front page offers an option to log in, with user name and password, at the very bottom...so it looks at first like ONLY a member could get in through the "back door" at t he very bottom...

In fact, if you put in an incorrect username etc in the bottom...it does then offer you the option of registering...but ONLY if you have already tried a user name...

so someone who wanted to join probably just wouldn't try that ....

These Google banners are going to stop a lot of people either logging in OR joining IMO Sad

Google Ads banner Empty Re: Google Ads banner

Post by Mike 13th November 2009, 12:01 pm

I have discovered that with a great deal of moving around the empty areas of the banner and hovering you might be able to get some of the buttons to appear. But that's out of the question for new people.

I did get to the help area for the (what I think is this) ad facility. But I don't have high enough speed access to look at very much. Presumably "where on the page" is controllable, or if not, then presulably where our stuff is on the page would be.

I have also discovered if you hover just at the top edge of the banner you can get the little hand symbol to appear, click, and it will take you to your pm's or gallery etc. Anyway, it sort of all works and I'm sure Badger will sort it just as soon as he is able too!

Ah well, it's a new forum and there are bound to be the odd hiccups. I can happily live with it till Badger gets a chance to have a peek at the problem after all he has a life to get on with too!

Google Ads banner Empty Re: Google Ads banner

Post by Adrian 13th November 2009, 2:41 pm

ok - my fault

I have adblocker installed on my netbook, so where you were all seeing a google ad - I had a big blank space. I assumed everyone else did as well and wanted to tighten up the look. I thought that I had ads disabled on the site. So I spent the evening tinkering with the CSS stylesheet to tighten up the space.

I shall restore it to the previous appearance until I find away of removing the ads banner

sorry folks - mea culpa

I've removed the section of code that I put in - it should be back to normal - can someone let me know if it is?

Google Ads banner Empty Re: Google Ads banner

Post by Adrian 13th November 2009, 3:03 pm

The only way I could remove the ads was to delete the code and set ads for guest only - so you will see them pre log in, but not after..

If the forum grows to a member decent size and is used more, then I will buy a suitable domain name and host it properly, then all ads will disappear, but I am unwilling to assume the cost of doing that until I am sure that the forum has a future...
