Which word do you feel best descibes the "mod" role
renaming the Go to/moderator name
Time for me to pick your brains again...
As you know, I dislike the word moderator and the association it has with folk acting as forum police.
I am now somewhat dissatisfied with the term "go to guy/gal", but at a loss for a suitable word.
So, suggestions please..
(and please, no justifications for the word Moderator, I don't like it and this is one of the extremely rare times when I will exert my privilege as forum owner to veto something..)

Re: renaming the Go to/moderator name
I have to admit I have never really like 'go to guy/gal' as I don't think it is immediately clear what it means.
Whilst I understand and agree with your views on the word moderator, it is a term people understand and expect on forums. Anything too leftfield just gets confusing IMO.
Something that suggests 'guide' or 'helper' without implying position of authority... can't think. Brain is too frazzled this evening. Need large glass of tonic.

Sadly, not a very descriptive or accessible word to describe the role that the moderators do...
Re: renaming the Go to/moderator name
I have seen "Forum admin" on some other fora...with the owner/head cheese person called something else...
which
is all we Go to Guys/Gals are, effectively. All we do extra to is
modify/lock/split etc threads, purely admin stuff, we do not moderate in
any sense of the word, which means alter or edit etc....
I don't like "moderator" either, but Billy is right, we need a title which helps members to identify those who can help
"Section leader" ? and the different bits become sections?
Rambling now....

Re: renaming the Go to/moderator name
I did think Forum Pixies/Fairies instead of Got to Gals, Forum Elves instead of Go to Guys but I thought Forum Elves would be quite good as an overall!

Re: renaming the Go to/moderator name
You will find that I am too short, hairy and tubby to be either goblin or elf - more hobbit than dwarf as well....
However, this is a touch off topic

Well, its more obvious than Go to Gal/Girl I think...
Forum admin is obvious...which is why I suggested it. But a bit bland, maybe

Re: renaming the Go to/moderator name
Quite like Elves, although I did mis-read it originally as "Forum Elvis" which gave me whole different image!
"Leader" was the only other thing I could come up with, but didn't like that much.

Re: renaming the Go to/moderator name
To be honest, until this thread, I had no idea what the go to g. was all about. I'd only understood the roles of given people by context.
Well, I don't know if the garden gnome is as ubiquitous outside the US, but maybe forum gnomes would suffice? A bit less "swishy", too. Not that swishy is a bad thing. If you roll that way....
Alternately: Toadstool Commander
Brownie Majorette
She/He of Well Worn Wellies

Re: renaming the Go to/moderator name
How about "topic co-ordinator"?
The Elves thing is cute but if we are to be taken seriously as a forum to newcomers then calling ourselves, elves/pixies/faeries etc is, as Billy points out, a bit twee and could put people off.

OOOOOOOoooooooooooooo forum Elvis, I do love that... Uhuh...*lip curls*
Forgot to add. I understand Moderator, I don't really ever do it, mind you, but I do understand it.. but I don't like go to gal/guy,
Re: renaming the Go to/moderator name
My thoughts (post beer and wine) are...
Forum fairy folk, nice idea, but a touch obscure and yes, a touch twee. Much as I would like to have Admin Boggart etc, I am trying to steer the forum into the mainstream and it would be a little odd... Also I am given to understand that another place has a goblin or somesuch and it is good to carve our own path...
I am inclining towards Team/staff member or something along those lines, slightly informal, certainly less formal than Moderator, but still indicating that those who carry out the role are there to do a job...
As I have indicated on other threads, the (for want of a better word) Mod role is not about policing the forum, it is more about developing allotted sections with some day to day housekeeping...
Dunno, brain is on the fritz at the moment and I am losing my perspicacity.

Re: renaming the Go to/moderator name
As has been observed, people expect admin or moderators.
I fully understand why you want to avoid those: because of past problems elsewhere, but I don't really think it was the name that caused the problem.
You have set out clearly the role of the moderator (by whatever name) in writing, for all to see. (I think you have, I remember reading it)
I think that should be sufficient.
Don't like "elves". If you must go that way, better to be piskies.

Re: renaming the Go to/moderator name
My problem with the word Moderator doesn't just relate to another place, but to the way mods behave on comment sections on newspapers and on fora the world over. People have come to expect Mods to be heavy handed, authoritarian, inconsistent and sometimes actually following an agenda. That is why I want to avoid using that word.
I may just go with Team or Staff or a synonym thereof and see how that goes for a while, maybe integrate the wee folk into the forum ranking system..
