Likes/dislikes
I noticed this morning our forum had sprung up a like and dislike button by each post.
My immediate reaction was that the buttons were big and ugly, and I'd rather people posted their thoughts, if they have anything to add, so I turned it off. But, maybe others might think differently - perhaps I should pop it back on for a bit so you can all decide !
I'm uneasy about this aspect of social media, where it can become a sort of stamp collecting / popularity poll, which insecure young people can come to take as a measure of their worth. Not that we have many such people on here

Oh, incidentally we can also have only a like button, and we can display who liked a post, or even who disliked one - as if the internet needed any more discord !

Re: Likes/dislikes
The only thing I would mention is that there are times when it's nice to acknowledge a post when I haven't necessarily anything to say about it. I think on here, as we are so few, it's a bit unnecessary, but I do use it on another forum I belong to.

If I can keep just the Like button, and make it less garish, maybe it stays ...

I entirely agree with freebird's view.

Re: Likes/dislikes
I have got rid of the dislike button, I think the world has enough negativity already ! The like button can stay, but it would be nice if it were in the forum style - I think though it is one of the bits I can't change without Founder access - that's still Adrian, and it is probably too much bother to change it over for the sake of the look of a button.

Re: Likes/dislikes
I like being able to acknowledge what someone has said by hitting the 'like' button, but I'm glad we don't have a 'dislike' button. We are all perfectly polite and respectful to each other, but I can imagine some circumstances (like the local town group I'm in on Facebook)where it would be abused on a regular basis!! I do think about leaving this facebook group from time to time because some people seem to take a delight in winding others up, but it's quite useful if you need local information.

I also agree with the general view. Sometimes it's good to be able to acknowledge a post even if you dont particularly have anything to say. Sometimes I just like to read and haven't the energy to do battle with autocorrect.

Ok, dislike has gone as Dandelion and I both disliked it Like can stay. Hopefully I can one day make it less garish.

Re: Likes/dislikes
Is there an option to have a notification of Likes? Unless I actually went back to my calabrese post, I wouldn't have known it had been Liked. And if the recipient doesn't know, it makes it a pointless extra.

Re: Likes/dislikes
I think this is a feature still evolving - I can raise some questions with the developers.
There is some control of notifications; if you go to your profile via the button in the top toolbar, then choose the notifications tab, you can select things you're notified of by email or push notification. It seems that for likes, the email notification can't be selected, but you can select a push notification - I don't know a lot about them, it is the sort of system used to send popup notifications to phones, don't know how it works (or doesn't !) from a website. I can ask if it can be made to work by e-mail. You an but ask ...

If you see me liking my own posts, don't worry, it isn't my ego getting out of hand, it is just testing !
