Crochet is the new knitting
Well for me it is.
Earlier this year, my MIL sent me the first part of a part series about learning to crochet (she had bought one for herself a well).
Well, I am used to succeeding at any craft I turn my hand to, I am fairly crafty and have a feel for most - not so with crochet. Bloody yarn kept falling off the hook, I couldn't get the tension right and the whole thing was literally thrown across the room on several occasions...
Finally, because I am stubborn and hate to be defeated by wool, I cracked it and have started on my first big project. I have to admit that I think that I now prefer crochet to knit, I prefer the texture of the material it produces and the overall look.
Here is a photo of my nearly finished first strip of the throw I am making..

Well done that man. Looks good. I still prefer knitting as I can watch TV at the same time..

Re: Crochet is the new knitting
It was only sheer bloody mindedness that stopped me from chucking it JG, it was a nightmare getting the hang of it.
Re: Crochet is the new knitting
I did a one day crochet course once and it did just seem to click. Slight problem is that I've not gone back to it since... Really ought to do so sometime soon...

I was the same as you Badger. Got so frustrated to start with and ended up with a squishy triangle instead of the square I was trying to make now I'm totally in love with it.
I love the simplisity of it, if I make a mistake I can usually cover it up and if i'm doing a piece without a pattern I can just change it as i go. I also change patterns to suit me. I could never have done any of this with knitting after just a year.
Your work looks super neat too. Nice one.

I have come to loathe knitting because for
me it takes soooo long and I get too impatient,
but crochet is so much faster I love it! That
portion of your throw would make a lovely
scarf Badger

I admire your determination badger - I used to crochet as a teenager but I'll be blowed if I can get to grips with it now

I'm now halfway through the 3rd stripe, will put up a photo later of the first two now they have been finished and joined.
Re: Crochet is the new knitting
Well I have not done any crochet for several weeks, result is that I had totally forgotten how to do it, but under way again now.
OH promised some people knitted hats for the footy season, so I have been doing those in the evening. I have told him he is not to give away my time again.

Thanks Pol
its a slow process, but its getting there.
Once its done, I will be starting to process raw fleece and spinning my own yarn, so I may be a while in starting a new project ...

Oh wow, that's brilliant! I had a friend sit me down once to show me a little bit of crochet, and I actually really enjoyed it. I keep debating getting into it a bit more - I can't knit to save my life.

wow Badger, what a gorgeous blanket! You must feel well chuffed with yourself at that!
Crochet pattern lingo
I got a rather passable kit delivered today to do some handwarmers; I opened up the kit with much excitement, and then read the instructions:
2ch * 1 sc in next 1st chain loop, 1ch * rep from *to* end the row with 1sc in the last chain lp.
Er....what? I just stared at the directions with a fair bit of bogglement, then gave up and decided I'd just single-stitch the whole thing, which is what I'm currently doing! There's a wee floral decal that is supposed to go on these (if I can bring myself to put a flower on anything I wear) which will probably also need translation.
I'm actually surprised my fingers remember what they're doing; I haven't done any crochet in years, and while that's encouraging, I did intend on making some of these things for mates this Xmess, but as I wanted to try something infinitely more interesting than single-stitch I'm a bit frustrated now.
For example, these are GORGEOUS and my friends would love these for sure, but i stare at the pattern and think "quoi?"

Translations, anyone?

Re: Crochet is the new knitting
I'll start by saying that I have only ever done a one day crochet course and I'm currently sat here with a crochet book in front of me to try to help.
Well ch = chain and as dc = double crochet I'm guessing that sc may be single crochet?
Does that help or confuse things more??? Badger's done some crochet recently so he mat be able t help and I'm sure others will be able to!

Cheers - I think I got this bit sussed but I'm sure something else will stump me in future so I'd greatly appreciate having something to refer back to.
