What have you done outside lately?
Just lately I have discovered that red eared sliders (that little turtle sold with the horrid bowl complete with island and plastic palm tree ) are absolutely fantastic eats! I got ours as it was crossing the road but they are seemingly easy enough to catch on hook and line. Use chicken gizzards for bait as they are tough enough that the turtle has to bite down HARD so hooks itself firmly.
Its a very sweet meat. And if they arnt native to your area you are doing a favor to teh wild by eating them.
Win win all the way round
So, whats everybody doing in the wild lately?

Squirrel
Last winter I bought a fish club (priest) and set a live trap in the back yard. A trapped squirrel + pillow case + club = lovely dinner!
Funnily enough I learned that one from Hugh Fernly Wit Whitin Witting...how does one spell his last name anyway? When he was doing his wild food tour of England he had a bit about the New Forest and the ranger was doing a trap emptying round and thats how he sorted them.
I liked it because I could select for males only as I dont want to reduce the numbers too much but it might work for your population control
And oh yum! They arnt half tasty

Thats when the hunting season starts.
Now, if they were doing harm to the house or garden I could do them in as nuesence animals but they arnt really doing any harm so will let them be fruitful and multiply and get them this winter.
Georgia'a season starts in August but we have to wait a full month longer!
Drat!!!
Anyone been fishing lately?

Re: What have you done outside lately?
Got to go out fishing yesterday AT LAST and it was fantastic!
Even without catching anything more than a crab snack it was sooooo beautiful.
Saw quite a few manatees, a pod of dolphins, an osprey and loads of fish jumping and mocking me
The sky was blue, the sun was hot hot hot and the sea breeze was wonderfully cool.
Fastest two hours I have spent for ages but child free hours are few and far between so am snatching the time youngest spends in morning pre school as just for me time.
Have to say that a manatee can give you a heart attack when all your attention is focused on the fishing poll and it comes up beside you and goes......................
FWWWWOOOOOOOOOSH!!!

Sorry, we are sooo far from the sea so no. And our pool only supplies froglets, toadlets, and other very small wildlife which are for nature reserve-ness, not eating...

Re: What have you done outside lately?
Took the kids out to celebrate "Take a kid fishing!" week.
OMG I am soooooo tired
We got there and I was baiting the second fishing pole when my boyos cried MANATEE LOOK LOOK LOOK MAAAAAAAAAANATEES!!!
And sure enough, there they were, right beside the dock, feeding on the low lying branches of the mangrove trees. If we had gotten on our bellies we could have touched them two big girls (I think) and a baby aaaaaaaw sooooo cute, like a big grey grub
I learned something today though, the run of hte mill kiacker has NO MANNERS we were fishing but about 4 just pushed their boat thingies right amongst our lines making a hell of a noise with no attempt at all of sharing the space. And it was a BIG SPACE with us trying to keep out of the manatees way but every time the kids went to cast their lines I had to do it for them so they wouldnt catch a kiacker
Never thought the day would come along when I would get tired of manatees but by the umpteenth time they went past I was a bit fed up to be honest. They were OK but their followers were right in the way!
And just when teh manatees went away and the fish came back, guess who showed up?
Dolphins
Its no wonder we had almost no luck catching fish with all that lot swimming back and forth!
But it was a super day! (hot though, VERY HOT)
The kids could play on the playground things when they got tired of fishing and there are loos for that need too.
Did catch two crabs big enough to bring home so cooked and picked them for the kids. Put the meat into four piles and ate mine BEFORE calling them to theirs. That way I got some this time lol.
Now to clean teh two catfish and cook them for another few nibbles.
Not much meat was caught but many great memories made.
Cant ask for more than that out of a day, can you?

It really was a lovely day out!
My newest foray into the world of wild meat though led to a really bad day being had by me mum though!
Caught a turtle crossing the road - right about where I caught the last one - and brought it home for dinner.
After I had cleaned it I put the legs and neck into a pan to par boil and fried the back strap. Just about enough meat to make a med size scallop really but she and I shared it and really enjoyed it.
Within 20 min she was vomiting with swollen tongue and numb tingling lips
She is OK and was over the worst of it by that evening but it was a shocker to say the least!!!
The only thing we could think of was that the turtle had been contaminated by lawn chemicals and the like as the ponds it had lived in are surrounded by houses.
Wont be eating any turtle picked up near the house again! Which leaves me waiting for the boat to be back on the water to reach lakes without surrounding houses and roads.
Might be a long wait
