Setting up a DIY Worm Bin

Worm bins have found their way into homes, classrooms and offices across America and elsewhere in the world as a method of reducing the amount of food waste thrown out with the garbage or down the drain. This fun and educational method of composting with worms or vermicomposting also produces a rich source of natural nutrients
for plants.

Great link.This has made me think about the school where I work - we have been told that we can't have a compost bin because of the perceived problem of rats (even though I have gone into the precautions which can be taken, the answer is still no.) But I've just remembered that there is a worm bin, unused in the Special Needs garden (but needing some radical cleaning - the member of staff who was operating it was ill and left: the bin filled with liquid and the worms drowned). I might use some free time when it happens to clean the bin and get it working again. There are lots of teabags and fruit debris from the staff room which get thrown away, and I just might have some spare eggshells.... The autistic unit has raised beds where they grow veg, so the compost would come in handy for that.

Now would be a good time as there are loads of worms in the compost bins, so ytou could separate some out to "restart" the worm bin.

If you need more worms than you have in your bins, you can have some of mine....I have many many many worms....

Ah that reminds me, must move mine from the overwintering spot in the greenhouse, think it may be warm enough now...
