I've not yet tried wine making, but would love to give it a go... and as a few of you have been saying - it's been a great year for fruit. There are still loads of rosehips, elderberries and sloes still around.

So how do I get started? I've got demijohns and fruit. What else do I need? How do I do it? What would make a good starter wine for a beginner to try out?

A big clean vessel to do the initial fruit bashing in. Unless you are making a dj at a time, in which case a big bowl will do.

yeast, camden tabs ( or not...) sugar, a long handled spoon is handy, as is a big seive and a funnel. You can strain the fruit through a clean muslin or a tea tower or a cotton jelly bag...

Airlocks ( get the smooth sided ones if poss, the bubble ones are a sod to clean!) and bungs which fit the DJ and have a hole for the airlock.

eventually, bottles to put wine in.

Umm...sure I have missed off something, will have a think while I drink my tea

Get a copy of this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/First-Steps-Winemaking-C-J-J-Berry/dp/1854861395

the bible of the beginner (and the veteran) winemaker.

I am on about my third copy - as they have disintegrated through overuse/pages stuck together with sugar solution etc.

Lol

same here, ours fell to bits and it was our joint third copy - we both had copies before we were married....the spines crack and you lose pages I find!

I got a replacement from a charity shop - you can usually find them in charity shops!

I think all recipe books, be they food or drink, should have teflon-coated pages so food and wine stains can wipe off.

Yep and be multi sewn in with kevlar thread so they NEVER fall to bits...

I often despair at the construction of recipe books as they get SO much use ( if any good)
