So far so good.
It has been obsessive news over here and its been great to see positive stories for a change

Feels a bit like I did watching the moon landing. So far, so good. Stayed up far too late last night, watching and hoping

Re: Chilean miners
Me too. Just watched the 8th arrival.
The ones coming up at the moment are the men with health problems so hope all is well. I think i've just heard it said that one man has been flown to hospital, but i know theya re all going to hospital.
I think the BBC is currently broadasting a tv engieers message on sound!

Re: Chilean miners
The really brave ones are those rescuers who went down into that hell! But they are all so very brave.

Re: Chilean miners
They are all going to be flown asap to hospital, after an initial triage and meeting with their loved ones I think
ah they can decide not to go if they wish but have agreed to go for a couple of days at least.

Re: Chilean miners
How nice to see something like this end so well for a change, I hope they are given the help & support to cope with their new found "celebrity" & not just dumped after their 15 mins of fame...

I can't help feeling that the 6mths of psychiatric help they have been promised may not be enough

I agree - hopefully the help will be there whenever any of the miners need it.

Re: Chilean miners
I think it is true to say that a lot of the live coverage is padding.I haven't actually been sitting glued to the TV (contrary to appearances) but I have seen some things over and over and over again.

So glad they're all out
I can't imagine what it must have been like, or to have been the very last rescue worker left in the mine... noone there, just you... makes my skin crawl just thinking bout it!

And the thought that it has worked 32 times, is it still going too...

I have to admit I started feeling the same; how many more government leaders were going to call so they could be quoted as being supportive on Twitter?
I did a search for mine collapses yesterday and I hate to say it, but there have been quite a few of them in the past few months. Even just a few days ago, in which 200 people in Africa died...the youngest of which was a 12 month old child strapped to the back of his mother who was down there mining, because of course she was too poor not to be down there working. No discussions there about safety precautions, protocols, rescues (as often happens whenever the word 'Africa' seems to come into things) Hello, where's the reports?
I am glad they are out, I am amazed they managed to survive down there and did not completely and utterly break down mentally. However, while everyone is jockeying for position to be noticed, I can't help but feel for the people who, well, haven't been. What will we learn, what can we change, if anything at all, to prevent it from happening to anyone, anywhere?
Or is it just really a great opportunity to cash in on some political publicity?

Re: Chilean miners
Quote from a nephew of one of the miners
"In this world we worry so much about insignificant things, while these 33 men were trapped underground just trying to survive," he says. "Maybe it's time we all started concentrating on the vital things in life, and these two months have shown that everyone counts!"
This was a time when many people from around the world came together to make a difference, and they succeed.
Positive, constructive action.
