Duck, mushroom and onion pie. Duck left over from Christmas, and I used some of the mushrooms I dehydrated last year for the first time - they were good. The pastry, if I say so myself, was bloomin superb! And some surprise carrots that I found in the bottom of the vegetable box - surprise because they were the only half dozen that survived last year. They must have been in the fridge for five months! Tasty!

I love risotto.

i made a rice pudding today as I found a reduced jug of milk in Waitrose. I didn't have nay butter to add (as told to do in the recipe) so substituted sultanas and cinnamon. Very tasty and less fatty - I've got to look after MR JG's cholesterol levels.

Sea bass, and home grown vegetables - 'Nicola' potatoes, carrots (Early Nantes I think) and 'Tendercrop' green beans. Really simple food, simply cooked and utterly delicious.

Tonight I'm planning Fasolakia a Greek bean stew, using some of my flageolet type beans which have done very well this year, cooked with tomato, onion, celery, carrot and herbs. Mmm. Shame I haven't got any homegrown celery, that's the only bought ingredient, but my efforts to grow my own have been far from successful !

Last night Mrs C-H served Sweet dumpling squash, roasted in the oven then filled with a mulato based beef chilli, topped with cheese and baked in the oven. Mmm. Thanks to whoever put the Sweet dumpling seeds in the seed swap !

Does anyone have a good recipe for Almond and Pear cake? Mr D and I visited a cafe last week and I had a piece of this lovely cake - I have googled it, and made a pear and almond cake yesterday but it's not the same. The recipe I made had 8 eggs, 12 oz of ground almonds, about the same of sugar, and the same again of stewed pears.The whole lot was whizzed in the processor, and the batter baked for about an hour. It's very moist, but the one I had last week actually had bits of fruit in it rather than being whizzed together. I think it also had flour in it. Any suggestions?

Would the recipe that you used work do you think if you left the pears out of the whizzing & stirred some cut up chunks in at the end (or put half in stewed & half cut up). I've never come across a recipe with so much ground almond, if you substituted some of it with flour you could perhaps use some almond essence.

I may have found a better recipe - it's one for an apple and almond cake (which does have flour in) - I'll just use pears instead!! I'm not sure I'd use the 8 egg recipe again: it was very expensive with the amount of almonds. I agree with you on the essence, Ploshkin (though some ground almonds are nice for texture). I'll have to experiment...

Last night C-H Jnr was on a remembrance weekend scouting trip, so it was my chance cook something "grown up". I made venison and beetroot casserole, with potato & celeriac dauphinoise and purple sprouting broccoli, followed by tarte Tatin. Herbs (thyme, oregano and parsley), garlic, red onion, beetroot, potatoes, PSB, apples all home grown Smile 

Venison was so good. What a great meat, and we have plenty of deer - too many Muntjac. We should eat more of it really.

I returned home to a vegetable crisis; we need to use 5 cabbages and 4 heads of broccoli in the next few days !  I used some up by tonight by making Kari Seyur with homegrown onion, garlic, Jalapenos, sweet Nardello peppers, courgette, broccoli, cabbage, carrot, potato, french beans, broad beans, and coriander seed.

Broccoli and stilton soup is good for using up a fair quantity - bung it in the freezer until the weather is colder.
