Recycle & Reuse
Having had trouble keeping warm over the cold spell, I needed to find an extra layer to wear indoors. Upstairs to wardrobe & found 2 fleece jumpers/tunics which were wearing thin & the sleeves were very thin.
Cut out the sleeves, & cut the jumper part up the middle.
Turned a single hem to the outside on the 2 middle edges & stitched the hem with a herringbone stitch in a bright colour wool.
Ended up with a rather nice waistcoat/body warmer type thing to go over my sweatshirts, which just gives a bit more warmth. Really pleased with an evenings work.
Remains will be made into small blankets for the dolls house chests. I like to fill things up!!

Re: Recycle & Reuse
Sounds like a good day's work, Pol.
The cold weather has inspired me to alter the curtain over the front door, which is supposed to keep out draughts, but has shrunk a bit. This is a project for warmer weather, when the curtain is no longer in place, but I'm going to use denim jeans cut into strips to extend the curtain width and lengthwise, then cut patches to sew onto the curtain to make it look patchwork. I'll also line the curtain to thicken it. It's blue thin striped fabric, so patches and strips of denim in different blues should look OK. Might go crazy and sew some wooden buttons on.....

Re: Recycle & Reuse
Pol - a fab bit of reusing there! Any chance of a photo?
D - I really ought to get round to making a curtain to go over our front door. Might need to move a mountain of junk first though

Mrs C - I really can recommend a curtain overthe front door for keeping the heat it. We used to avae a portiere rod, which opened with the door, butwhen it broke we shiveredfor awinter without it and now have a plain curtain track and life the track on and off each day, but it is worth it!

Re: Recycle & Reuse
JG - fully with you about benefits of a door curtain - at the moment I figure the piles of shoes, hats, scarves, gloves and DIY bits and bobs are probably providing some insulation!

Re: Recycle & Reuse
Yes, I am also not fond of door curtains. Where it sat against the wall it helped trap damp and create a nasty mouldy corner. I binned it in favour of a double glazed door, but I could not stand those plasticy looking things, or find a wooden door of the right size, so ended up making my own double glazed hardwood door. Talk about a job getting out of hand ...

Re: Recycle & Reuse
OK, so I'm looking for rain barrels to use for the garden. I've found someone selling plastic 55 gal barrels for a fiver. They were used for soap before. Some type of industrial detergent, I believe. I'm thinking that may not be suitable for collecting water for the garden. Can you guys think of any way to reclaim them or clean them to make them servicable? Or are they just wrong for this application?

Re: Recycle & Reuse
Over here juice containers are the norm, so you get water collected which is safe to use BUT it smells forever of orange or blackcurrant...
Hmm, soap..industrial...
repeated scrubbing and washing? Use the water for flushing the loo, for a long time, until the water is no longer soapy?

Re: Recycle & Reuse
My fear is that even after all of the suds are gone, it could still leach out chemicals into the water. Might be no good for growing veggies. Think I'll keep looking. Wish I could find those 55 gal juice barrels!

Re: Recycle & Reuse
We've got a water butt made from a recycled container from the local cheese factory - is that a possibility Mr S? Just wondered if there might be some factories near you which would have food containers to recycle.

That's ideal. Looking into a spice packing and mixing company near here.

Re: Recycle & Reuse
Used teabags in the bottom of pots help to keep the compost damp for longer.
