Hello from Kansas!
My name's Caitlin, and I currently live in a small Kansan oasis known as Lawrence. It's a nice place, filled with good people. I bake, compost (can't do too much gardening at my home since I rent), and rock climb. Would like to possibly move somewhere that I could do more of these activities, but eh - in this economy I guess I should be grateful I'm employed and shouldn't take it for granted. :-P Also, I can be a pretty fierce debater - please forgive me if I come off as rude! I will usually come to agree with someone if they have a good point - probably a good quality overall, but means I didn't do too well at the even in high school. So I'll be found in the politics and philosophy forum, probs. lol. I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone!

Welcome, enjoy. I've read a couple of your posts already. I can see what you mean about debating. Looks like 'fun' already, lol.
Isn't Lawrence near Leavenworth? Interesting idea, that: DOA payroll and corrections facility... OK, another debate, lol.

Yep, we're within an hour's drive of each other! Though I will admit that I've never been. Not really much out there other than that prison you mention, lol.

Since she didn't explain, she probably didn't mean "oasis" in terms of water but culture (Lawrence is a uni town). Note that Kansas City (a fairly civilized place) isn't in Kansas but across the river in Missouri.
I'm not sure why would have to move to a different state for baking, composting, or gardening but not only is Kansas flat* in most places, it's also not rocky.
* There are some quite flat places with excellent rock climbing where the flat is bedrock but rivers have cut canyons. For example, the edges of the Candian Shield are in many places fairly spectacular cliffs.

Re: Hello from Kansas!
Yes, exactly, thank you for the clarification. We aren't like Water World or anything. There *is* a fair bit of Kansas City in Kansas, also, but it's not a very nice part of town and I certainly wouldn't want to go there at night. When I said oasis I meant... well, let's be honest, Kansas is fairly conservative. Most people are pro-coal, since we have coal plants that provide jobs out West, and with Brownback as our current Governor we've started doing stuff like shutting down art programs throughout the state. And of course there was that whole hubbub a while ago where the state banned teaching evolution in public schools.
We do have some nice rock climbing areas out in Missouri, but that's about 4 hours away from here. There isn't much local climbing to be done that isn't in a gym.
