Courgettes Over Winter... Empty Courgettes Over Winter...

Post by Sparhawk 13th September 2011, 1:03 am

I pulled the 2 courgette plants from my raised bed on Friday, they had given the best they could & supplied us with 25 over the summer I was quite happy with the return which is the main thing, & learned some useful lessons for next year, just pondering how successful would a courgette plant likely to be in an unheated greenhouse over winter in the south of the UK...

I have to say I don't know for sure, and if it can be done in the UK the IOW is probably the most likely place, but I would expect light to be a limiting factor; many things will survive overwinter if kept frost free, little can be encouraged into active growth though. Personally I prefer to leave the greenhouse empty Nov-Jan and let it get properly cold to reduce overwintering pests.
Outside of Nov-Jan there are always tomatoes and chillies at some stage of growth in there.

Just off the top of my head (because I've never tried it...) I wonder if you would have problems with the taste being affected if grown in this way. I often seem to find at the end of the season that courgettes are bitter, even though there is a bit of autumn sun and the plants are still growing OK.

I don't think I'll bother with it, it was just a thought as Lady S & I are the only two who eat them at Sparhawk towers & it would have been nice to have some through the winter. I think I'll go with a safer option that makes better use of the space...

I have to agree with other, Spar, and it wouldn't probably work cos noone does it, including me... but then again... what's to lose? Go on, give it whirl... you never know... Wink
