Mums grand old fellow has just gotten feline dementia and a few other health issues and is failing fast.

I want to help him shuffle off this mortal coil at home but mum wants him totally unconscious first.

Do you know of any way to do this? A cat sedative or tranquilizer perhaps? But over the counter as money is tight and a vet is going to charge bundles for this.

GB wins my prize for bizzare question of the year !

I supect that there is no socially acceptable / humane recommendation for killing a cat beyond one involving a qualified vet. I can think of many ways of doing it such that the cat would not know much about it (and I guess GB can too), but I don't want the animal rights lot after me ...

What's the prize? I love to win prizes Laughing

The last cat my mum had put down at the vets the vet bungled it and the cat suffered through a death that was neither fast nor humane Evil or Very Mad

All she wants now is for her grand old fellow to be totally unaware when I pull the trigger. That's all. So I am trying to find something that will make him sleep.

And the AR lot are nucking futso's and I don't want them after me either!

We had to decide about this when our guinea pigs got old; whether to have them put down by the vet, or let them die naturally. I opted for the vet in most cases, but with one guinea I made him comfortable and let nature take its course. It obviously took longer, but it was interesting that the pig seemed to know what to do - he burrowed under a thick pile of hay, and seemed to be glad to take water from time to time, but on the whole just wanted to be alone. I don't regret having done this, but I suspect that some people would have said I was letting him suffer. I can't think of any ways of helping the process along though - over here anything else would be illegal as CH says.

So is the cat! laugh

I did pour olive oil into both his ears today to combat ear mites so, once again, I am NOT his favorite person!

GB, you have reminded me - a word of warning to UK cat people.
A friend of mine poisoned her cat last year by using a cheap spot on flea treatment from a pound shop. The vet said that they had seen several cases. The cat survived after veterinary treatment & a big bill but the cheap stuff turned out to be a very false economy.

Presumably the law isn't as tough on animal meds as it would be on human medicines?
