Hello Alice, welcome.
Wow Orkney eh, I think you may win the prize for most northerly member.
So, what do you do all the way up there?

Re: Hello from Orkney.
I know, it's surprising isn't it - 59 degrees north.
We've been here nearly four years, we are renovating a traditional stone house and have about an acre of land. It's a tiny island, only about 100 households, and very much at the whim of the weather and the sea

Re: Hello from Orkney.
Hello ! I have fond memories of a visit to Orkney; definitely at the whim of the weather, but beautiful. So much so I almost proposed to Mrs C-H there but bottled out - still, got there in the end

Is it all the Orkney islands that are looking to go self sufficient in power?

It's a hot topic here, being particularly well blessed in the wind and wave department
But it's the isle of Westray that seems to be getting on with it.

Re: Hello from Orkney.
All I can say is don`t hold your breath. The Isle of Wight was going all eco with all sorts of things, but I do believe the latest carbon thingy showed we actually raised our emissions.
Also every time someone wants a wind whatsit the people complain & the planners say NO. I would rather have a wind turbine than the pylons that walk across the land, they are so ugly.
