Growing crops for the autumn undercover

default Growing crops for the autumn undercover

Post by Compostwoman on 4th September 2010, 11:07 pm

Where I say undercover I mean the PT, Green house, windowsil or porch !

I have planted outside all the remmnants of the leek plants which we use during the winter instead of "spring onions" or "chives". I have also put a few in pots undercover

also have planted pots of early carrots in the PT ( would work in a covered cloche outside as well) which yield tender crops in midwinter.

A few Kale plants undercover in winter give nice tender leaves as well, which are nicer than the outdoor plants. Same goes for spinach, either the real stuff or perpetual

A mixed herb pot ( sage, chives, thyme, rosemary, parsley) undercover in a cloche outside, inside in a PT or greenhouse, or even in a porch, will keep on cropping during the winter, as will pots of basil on a sunny windowsil

Lettuce will grow , winter varieties are best but most will grow, as will rocket and lamb lettuce etc.

Look for winter cropping varieties OR those designed for "early cropping" to get a harvest in before the winter shorter days come.
