CW I like your idea real renewal if you see what I mean.

We always had a box of figs for my Dad & he would spend half his time cleaning all the little pips off his false teeth.

Also used to have a type of fondant cream that does not seem available now, used to buy it in the baccy/sweet shop called Finleys.

Perhaps you should buy a box of choc brazils & share them with LSS in memory of your Dad Badger.

Elen I think my piece of charred wood will passed on to Spar, as I think he is the one who will see to it. We have no chance of an open fire or a woodburner unless we win the lottery.

Hey, Pol, I hope you do win.

CW, like the return of last year into this year. We have a ceremonial burning of the decorations on 12th Night so none but the piece of wood from the fire gets carried fwd. will ask the spiris if they would like me to change this, this year.

And I love keeping up the old traditions :-)

Special decorating fairies!!!

We put up a tree to call them, and they put all the room decorations in the front room, stopping off at nan's and grandad's to do theirs as well!

Maggie informed me last noght she nolonger believes on FC so not to bother with stockings... Shocked

I've been doing them for 17 years she can't just stop, she can't!!!! Laughing

What did you guys do when your kids nolonger believed? This is a whole new territory for me...

Well, you could always say that you'd like to keep the custom up, so you'll carry on doing it, and could they do a little stocking for you in return? I'm not sure when they're too old for stockings - I'm still doing one each year for a 27 year old!!!!

I still do stockings for DD (28 this year) and DS (26) if he's at home
The stocking HAS to contain an apple, a tangerine, a bag of chocolate coins and a chocolate Santa topped off with a cracker. Add to that a couple of little wrapped up gifts. It means there's still something to open when prezzies these days usually just consist of the money

Just because Cg now knows, doesn't mean we will stop doing the stocking...its a nice thing to have for her to open before we come down and open the wrapped up presents together...

I hope we will be doing what you do AJB when Cg is 28. (gulp...I will be 66, then.... gulp)

I did have have a stocking when I was a child, with the tangerine, chocs etc in, but as we grew up it sort of changed to haveing a few small gifts on Boxing Day 6 actually which included sweets. Still do it now for everyone as it makes a nice evening with a buffet & a few drinks. We are talking very small & often novelty things. Easy with the girls of the family, but not so easy with the boys.

The stocking thing mainly stopped because it was so cold & we waited for the fire to be lit, a cup of tea & a choccy biscuit, they were a luxury in those days, then we sat round together & opened our presants before breakfast & church.

I had a stocking till I left home at 17 Very Happy

my children don't have stockings but the ydo and laways have had a few small things left at the bottom of there bed, usually in a pillowcase loveflag

In 1944 my Mum bought The Christmas Book by Enid Blyton for my brother. As far back as I can remember she used to read a chapter every night for about 2 weeks before Christmas, this was even when we got older. It is a story, but combines customs & the nativity story as well.

Even now, so many years after Mum passed on I still read the book every year. Once I start it I can almost recite it word for word, but it is so nice & comforting.

Argh THAT age. Really she still wants the love and support but she IS grown up now. I just stuck more useful things in like guitar strings and plectrums...but still did it. He sulked the year I didn't do it.....

Did you know Christmas cards began so Victorian children could show there parents a composition that they had written & decorated.
Then parents thought it would be a good idea to greet friends in this way.
