Yes, I think I agree with Polgara. It is a bit 'kit-heavy' though. Personally, I can't be doing with kits, but they are a good way of finding out if you like doing something, without investing loads of time and money into all the individual bits. When I was teaching adults a lot, I used to make up gilding kits for the students, so that they could get a feel for the process of laying gold leaf without having to buy all the stuff. Buying good quality gesso on which to lay the gold leaf is virtually impossible, so making it is really the only option - a wonderful medieval process, using medieval ingredients!

I have a love hate relationship with kits - one one hand I love that they can jump start a new craft, on the other I dislike the cost that often far exceeds the value of the combined materials. Having said that, sometimes you can find real gems at sale times.

Kits are a funny one. As Badger says if it gets someone into a new craft then that's good, but it's not quite the same as doing things from scratch.
