As Rhomboid acres prepares to increase its poultry stock from 5 (oh, no, 4 rather - keep forgetting one died recently) to 50-odd, I have been pricing up additional hen-housing.

It is amazing the range of prices people will pay for what is essentially a wooden box. There are some reasonably priced ones out there but some horrendously overpriced ones as well.

This, however, takes the biscuit:

...but it'll still end up with chicken poo on it, and parasites running around inside! (I read the blurb too quickly, and thought it said something about dancing on cornish butter, which didn't sound very practical) And I thought the Eglu was expensive... Fresse

WTF?

Daydream shown here explores the delights of dancing daffodils and
delicate ivy on a base of Cornish Butter, the decorative design of your
Gypsy will be entirely inspired by you.

So that would be poo, mould and green lichen, then? All of which one can get for free, by just leaving it outside.....

I have a FoF house, its quite good, CM improved upon the design when he built his hen house for me, and likewise with the hen runs he built and the mega hen pen as well.

Flytes house nearest to bottom, takes 10 ( actually will easily fit 12 largish hens as they always pile in together And I thought the Eglu was expensive... Icon_rolleyes )

I thought we weren't supposed to use the word Gypsy to refer to Travellers/Romanys?

Just get a shed for them and add perches and nest boxes. Pat made some nest boxes for our coop and our chooks love them.
We are planning to get more hens soon too. We are lucky to have an old stone goat shed in our garden and so we are going to renovate that for the extra hens.

Compostman made me a fab hen house which, after looking at the commercial house I had previously bought, he was able to improve on a lot.

The Eglu is still the easiest to clean and disinfect but his home made wooden hen house is by far and away the best house I own.

Don't you think the Eglu makes the chickens too hot? Especially in the hot weather we have had recently? I can see the advantage in terms of cleaning, but chooks do need a lot of air movement in their coop to stay healthy. otherwise they would end up with respiratory problems.

No, it is fine. There is actually a lot of air flow through them and it is quite cool inside.
