Yes, I do in a way. If I'm at all unsure. I'm very observant and try to feel what goes on. If you've read Dune you'll understand what mean about reading signs.

I think the synapses aren't firing too well this morning so I'm missing your point, but basically yes, I eat steak tartare. Provided it stays still on the plate I will likely eat it. And, most important of all, if I know it had a good life, and my contract with it includes it agreeing to nourish me as food.

But I'm sure I've missed your point ... can still feel pointy stick poking me ...

I think kitchens are one person spaces in general, although I have a couple of girlfriends I can do the Kitchen Dance with very well. Cooking is like a journey meditation for me, I love it. But I need to be wholly in tune with anyone I work there with.

I am very fond of steak tartare too, and venison tartare is utterly divine. IIRC in Dune it was live raw cow though, which is pushing it a little even for me.

I'm not sure about kitchens. We have never had a large kitchen so with space at a premium, anyone extraneous to the cooking process is usually in the way. I would love to have a huge kitchen which would be the heart of all activity though. I love having people around when I cook. Just as long as they're not in my way.

It has to be dead for me too! I don't recall the scene and I thought I knew Dune off by heart :-), which book? I only know the first one well, the original, after that it was publisher fodder IMO. And I won't even look at Herbert's son's stuff !!!

We have some Exmoor venison to eat on workshop so may try it tartare. Do you have a good recipe?

Indeed I do:

Seasoning:
2 French shallots, finely chopped
1/2 tsp capers, minced
1/2 tsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp olive oil
1/2 tsp veg oil
clove garlic, minced
cayenne pepper
paprika
S & P

Mix all ingredients together and leave for at least 12 hrs for flavours to combine

Meat:
800g venison (shoulder is best for this)
2 egg yolks
Dijon mustard
flat parsley, chopped

finely chop or whizz the meat. DO not overprocess - you want some chunkier bits to ensure a good texture. Mushy tartare is ghastly.

Put the meat in a very cold bowl, mix in the egg yolks, a dash of mustard approx 2 tbsp of seasoning and salt and pepper. Adjust to taste.

I am scratching my head trying to think of an "eating a live cow" ep in Dune?

i can, however think of one in "the Resturant at the End of the Universe" part 2 of the HHGTTG series.....?

Can't remember where it is in Dune. Dreadful book TBH. Can vividly picture the scene in the film though - Sir Stingo in his winged pants tearing an ear of an upside down cow and munching on it.

Ah. So you remember it from the film version? Yes that was dreadful and not all the scenes were from the book!

I really can't remember a live cow eating scene in the book...

Goodness !!! I'm in quite the wrong neighbourhood. I think Dune is one of the best spiritual books ever written. We obviously live in very different universes!

But if you don't see it, you don't. Enough said.

BTW, there is no such scene in the book, although the Harkonens exhibit much cruelty as part of who they are.

FWIW, I love Dune. I think it is a wonderful book. Dune Messiah was OK, Childen of Dune got...silly...

the rest are garbage IMO

But Billy is right, the film WAS dreadful...( as was the mini series...!)

, I realised it was your opinion and everyone is entitled not to like a book. No disresepsect felt at all. I like Mary Gentle's "Golden Witchbreed" but the rest are garbage IMO. Takes all sorts bath

BTW, do you like Terri Windling's "Wood Wife"? It's one of the books I would rescue - right after the cats :-) - if the house caught fire.

I read all six (?) of them, and roughly agree with you, except that I rather liked Dune Messiah. The rest were not worth the time.

Now, sort of returning to topic, I once saw on TV something about Michel Roux (Snr) and his home kitchen. It was a kind of open plan thing, that essentially placed the chef pretty much on a stage in the living area of the house, the idea being not to seperate the chef from his guests (and perhaps just a little to indulge his ego ...). He was asked "but doesn't that make the whole house smell of cooking" to which he replied that the smells of cooking are the smells of food, and if you don't like food, you should not come to my house ...
