Using Hawthorn as a Hedgerow Empty Using Hawthorn as a Hedgerow

Post by NaturallySimple 24th February 2011, 5:10 pm

I know that this is done pretty frequently in the UK but not many people around here grow it. I use hawthorn a lot in my herbal blends and I would like to grow my own just because it is beautiful.

I was told one could keep it pruned back to a reasonable size and it would do well but I am not sure what was meant by reasonable.

So, if anyone has experience growing hawthorn, I would greatly appreciate it if you could share your wisdom.

Hi NaturallySimple Very Happy

I don't grow one as a hedge myself, just a two trees, but I do plant them for others. On the whole people tend to keep them between 6-9ft, I don't think they'd suit any smaller. They look amazing as part of a boozy, mized hedge.. you could also use guelder rose for hips, and blackberries, wild plum, blackthorn,.. I'll go get my planting list when I can find it... Embarassed

I'd love to be able to have trees, I just don't have room. I could accomplish something between 6-9 feet though. I would love to hear more suggestions.

I've some rugosa ordered for a sunny spot in the front that was previously turf grass but I run through rosehips like mad so more wouldn't hurt.
